duta has a very long half-life, and i've heard that it takes months to take full effect, also there is huge shedding associated with duta due to the increase in free testosterone, so you'll have to take some kind of topical anti androgen with it ie, spironolactone cream.

i've been on it for close to 2 yrs, would give it 5/10. the only topical that truly stopped my hairloss, uhh on the hairline was flutamide, boy that stuff was strong, in 1 wk of using it hairloss was nil. but the side effects overweight the benefits.

i don't think there is any generic finasteride in the US, i've never heard of one. even if there was, you would need a prescription to get it. the reason the international companies can make generics is bc of their patent laws, ie, they dont have to wait for a patent to expire before they can...
