10% Minoxidil Damage To Collagen Under My Eyes

Hi all,

joy oh joy, So I have been stressing about hair loss for about 2 years (now 27) I went to belgravia centre and we settled upon the 10% minoxidil as my treatment option, I had only been using the product for two weeks on my temples when I noticed puffy eyes in the mornings, (more so than normal). Sadly after two weeks I have lost collagen under my eyes resulting in deep circles. I do not seem to be the only one suffering from this as many other users have suffered the same side effects and there are studies that show it reduces collagen production. Very sad as even in such a short time I could see some effect.

Is there any other hope for me?

Many thanks,

Lessen your dosage. Either go from 2x a day to 1x a day and/or apply less at a time.

I'm wondering if you're overweight?
From only two weeks of using the stuff that's pretty mental.

It was using 1/4 of the dosage evening only (Belgravia is once a day not twice). No I am not overwieght though I'm curious as to what difference fat would make? I'm not sure what's wrong with some people on forums. There are clear reports noting that it stops collagen production for some people... It's a side effect and we all react differently. I'm pretty gutted as I was hoping this was going to be something I could use to combat the situation.

Are you doing anything that would cause minoxidil to go systemic?

example: applying to a wet scalp after shower.

Unfortunately it happens. Sides can happen with all treatments and it looks like you are in that percentage of people.

Well, I'm not qualified to offer you any medical advice. I myself have struggled with minoxidil in the past, and I am convinced that my sides were due to vasodialatory edema. What I did to fix my problems was to try to reduce water retention.

I take an over the counter diuretic, drink lots of water and reduce sodium intake. Several diuretics can cause you to deplete potassium, but there are some that are safe.

Incidentally, I also exercise regularly. I think it helps as well.

Good luck to you. I think there might be some new treatments on the horizon if you end up having to quit minoxidil, but for now it's kinda crucial for regrowth.

What other symptoms do you experience? Do you feel your eyes tired or strained?

If you don't sleep for two days you get the same effect so it's not out of the order to get the tired eyes look after two weeks on minoxidil.

I would advise you to get rid of the 10% minoxidil. It's way too strong, I've used it once for a month and it was extremely effective yet sides were strong too. Now I apply 5% 0.5-1 ml once a day, and sometimes every other day. Also, I noticed when applying it before bed it results in the puffiest eyes possible with dark circles, hence I only leave it for a few hours before washing it out.

I still get dark circles and puffy eyes every now and then, I'd stop minoxidil for a few days until the symptoms disappear, and then start again. I'd also stop it as soon as my skin feels dry on my forehead, as it means that it's starting to do some damage there.

Be careful before it wrinkles your eyes, as I'm seeing that you're having a small fine line appearing there, those are almost impossible to get rid of. Stop it for a few days, and then come back here and give us an update.

Did you get any shedding? Or noticed any vellus baby hairs?

In two weeks, you've lost collagen under your eyes due to a 5% lotion you apply to your scalp? Please.

This is utter BS and scaremongering. I've been using minoxidil for almost 6 years with no problem at all.

How do you know about the relation between minoxidil and collagen? Simple, you read about it before on the forums and it made you imagine things.

If you hadn't read about minoxidil reducing collagen, you wouldn't be posting this and you wouldn't noticed things that aren't there.

You say many users have had those "side-effects"? How many? Ten in total on various hair loss forums maybe? They're all paranoid.

Studies have shown that minoxidil inhibit collagen production, but they've never shown that minoxidil actually causes wrinkles.

By the way, if you're so much into studies, you should know that they've also proven that 10% minoxidil doesn't produce better results than the 5%.

So switch to the 5% version, quit being paranoid, and you should be fine.

Of course not, that would invalidate his baseless claim and show that those dark circles are in fact natural for him.

Another irresponsible post. I'm 25 and I have less wrinkles than some 20 year old I see after 6 years of using minoxidil.

And I get my blood pressure and heart tested regularly. I'm fine.

It's about time you get banned.

Just saw this so sorry for the slow reply, what on earth is wrong with you? lots of people have bags and dark under eye circles, do some research. side effects are different from person to person, this is why some are less common than others but it certainly doesn't make them non existent. Do you also have trouble believing in ED from finasteride? or because it's more sufferers does that validate it enough for you?

Grow up and don't be so negative. It wasn't natural for me at all and they have improved some way but still not back to before.

I agree with Fred. First off why don't you just take the 5% minoxodil. Secondly, even if these sides are somehow related to Minoxidil. Would you rather have the benefits of minoxidil with some wrinkles or the no minoxidil benefits and no wrinkles. I can empathize with pyscho-somatic symptoms. I'm glad I never paid much attention to these minoxidil side effects or I'd probably be too afraid to use it as well. Honestly, if you're on no other treatment (which you should be on ketoconozole as well) , minoxidil is your only hope at stopping/slowing hairloss. I would rather have wrinkly eyes and hair personally!

Minoxidil inhabits collagen production. Cheers

Thats an in vitro study, surprised you didn't link the Murad study because thats the one everyone soils their pants over. No minoxidil does not effect collagen in living, breathing individuals. It does cause angiogenesis so dark circles can occur if you're rubbing it under your eyes. Don't rub it under your eyes. Water retention can also happen, so puffy face/dark circles unlikely but possible. Aging? No

Severe weather retention. I gained 10 lbs in a month! I couldn't breathe properly
Yes its possible, one study showed minoxidil, even topical, can enlarge the left ventrical. The drug isn't without sides, cardiac ones are very real, however collagen inhibition isn't one invivo. The only skin case documented was the pseudoacromegally one from a long term high dose of oral minoxidil. This was caused by an accumulation of collagen.
