2nd Shed Of New Growth At 4 Months On finasteride

Okay, so this is an unusual question.

In about a week's time i'll have been on 0.625mg finasteride for 4.5 months. It's been up and down since starting, I had a mild, almost insignificant shed near the beginning and have since had good and bad days. Around month 3.5 I could've sworn my hairline was starting to thicken slightly, but 2 weeks and fast forward to today both my temples seemed to have thinned out again drastically.

The thing is, I think my rate of shedding of terminal hairs has now stabilised, or at least, I shed a very normal amount of terminal hairs a day. However, I have recently been shedding lots and lots of 1" - 3" hairs directly from my hairline where my thinning is. These are new growths with a tapered tip growing to a thicker base, so they could only have grown within the last 3 months and have never been cut.

My question is, what would cause such regrowth to shed after only a few months of growth? Are new growths typically weak and cycle out faster for a stronger follicle to grow back? Is a 2nd shed of new growth at 4 months on finasteride normal?

I started taking finasteride 3 months ago for my temple as well, i got really focused looking the mirror and some days feeling it was better somedays even worse - i think its nothing more than in your head, since finasteride is a slow and long process (for most) so i think in almost all cases something significant doesnt happen in 2 weeks.

Try to compare pictures or check the state of your hair on other spots or else this just seem like a case of overthinking

Do you have any articles or something that finasteride can actually cause a Telogen effluvium? in that case i would very much like to read it

I thought Telogen Effluvium got triggered by strong psychical and physical traumas, not talking a rash or feeling down, we are talking near fatal illness and PTS for eksample

hi guys,

thanks for your replies. I'm not sure about an effluvium... i thought that was supposed to occur all over your scalp? I'm only shedding miniaturised/new growth hairs directly from my hairline. It's not a terrible shed either, many people would probably even count it as a normal rate of shedding (< 50/day). However, I have been comparing photographs taken fortnightly since starting finasteride and i am definitely thinner now than baseline. I really hope this is just a cycle and the hairs will come back denser.....

Telogen Effluvium happens all over the scalp - correct

Sound like weak hairs ending their cycle, so if their dont get affected by dht and get the nutrients they need, they will come back stronger, shed of again, stronger shed of again etc..

i have and provided your link i still see no reason for finasteride to cause a Telogen Effluvium, i only see abrupt hormonal change, in which they use menopause as an example, which is pretty stressful for the whole internal system and hormone levels in woman, especially compared to finasteride - they actually even write minoxidil as a possible treatment.

Iam not saying this to nag or be negative, its just that Telogen Effluvium, is somehow used for people suffering from male pattern baldness, to relief people, so they think its just temporary.

yeah i do, reduces dht by up to 70%, increase t by up to 10% - if that was extremely stressful for the body, i wouldnt imagine only around 2% getting sides

How many people do you think get "sides" of pregnancy and menopause?
