7 years on Propecia...losing its effectiveness...

Hello everyone,

I posted this topic before under a different category and only got a few reponses for help. So hopefully posting it under here I might get more responses. I am really worried that I am finally losing the battle against male pattern baldness. I have been surfing on this website for over a few months now and have found this website to be very helpful and informative. I am currently 27 and starting this year it seems that Propecia for me has started to lose its effectiveness. I have either been on Propecia for 7 years or very close. My dermatalogist told me to try it out ever since its inception when it was very expensive. My hairline and temples are starting to recede again at a much faster pace. As of last year my hairline and temples were still going strong as I can remember. I have shedded so much thick natural hair recently that it is impossible to style my hair without people seeing the scalp in the front. So I have a few questions:

1.How many years of use before Propecia tends to lose its effectiveness?
2.If I start on Minoxidil would it help my situation with keeping my hairline and temples from receding more?
3.What else can I do to help my situation?
4. Would using Propecia and Dutasteride both at the same time be effective? ( I still have a year supply of Propecia but will be switching to Dutasteride very soon.)
Thank you forum!

Most ple in this forum will suggest adding minoxidil to your regime.

How do you plan to get hold of dutasteride?

I was researching on the internet and it seems there are many websites that are offering to sale Avodart or Dutas (generic brand). Has anyone in this forum tried Dutas. Please tell us about your experience if you have. Thanks.

Propecia ... according to the trial data... did start to fade in effectiveness at the 7 year mark for some people. I would give it until you have seen no reversal in shedding for 4 months ... before you do something.

At that time, I would suggest starting Rogaine 5% twice a day application. Rogaine has a shedding period associated with it during the first few months but you should recouperate and be back on your way to maintaining and even seeing some new regrowth in about 6 months.

Good choice that you only used Propecia by itself for so long!!!!!! You just bought yourself 7 years and now you can start Minoxidil and extend Propecia's effectiveness ..... and likely buy yourself at least another 5 years.

Thanks gourmetstylewellness.com, If Propecia stops being effective...do you think Dutasteride would help if I decided to switch over. I would definitely prefer to use Dutasteride over topical solutions just for the convenience.
It's anyone's guess. There is a possibility that you've exhausted the DHT inhibiting thing and need to add minoxidil. There's also a possibility that Dutasteride, being twice the DHT inhibitor, will be exactly what you need. Be aware of side effects potential however, and listen to your body if it tells you that you're doing it damage by taking it. Maybe give it a month evaluation. I used to hate the idea of topicals but they're really not so bad once you start using them.

Overall this is good news on the fact that Propecia can be effective in the long run.

Receder21,

How much improvement did you see while on your, almost tenure.

Thanks,
Tony

I have been on Dutasteride for coming up to 8mths now. That was 3mths Avodart and nearly 5mths Dutas I have not seen a difference in the two.

I get my Dutas from http://www.life-pharmacy.com/ :)

I hope this helps.

To be honest I did not see much improvement in the areas that were left with no hair already such as a little part of my temples. Propecia was really good for maintenance however up until this year. The majority of the hair I had already I kept until now. My friend on the other hand who was starting to bald the same time as I in college is really bald now. He never used any hair loss medicine.

how does this work?

does the body just start to produce more 5-alpha-reductase?

if this is so will an increased dose of finasteride be of benefit?

cheers

receder21, good to hear that Propecia will work for that long of a period. If the drug is starting to fade, you may want to up the dose from propecia to proscair and take 2.5MG (cut in to twos). Which may will help you.
