In this study, a caffeine-based topical 0.2% liquid was found to be no less effective than minoxidil 5% solution at six months. Also, the study shows that the 0.2% caffeine solution resulted in a significant improvement from baseline in scalp itchiness at 6 months whereas no such improvement was observed for minoxidil 5% solution.

So I think the caffeine solution could be an alternative method for someone has allergic reactions to the ingredients of minoxidil.

This study only measures percent hairs in anagen phase. Says nothing as to difference in hairs cosmetically.

Caffeine is also a COX inhibitor which would probably affect your hair over a longer period of time negatively. It's also a direct antagonist of adenosine which is good for hair.

I spoke about this in another thread but I think any short term benefit you get out of caffeine (if it's even noticeable) will be overridden by negative effects further down the line.
