Hi Guys,

OK Quick overview,

I am 25 years old, I have been battling moderate acne on my back, neck and shoulders for the last few years, I also have a receeding hairline which is becoming more and more noticeable by the day and to top it off my libido is non existent,

I dabbled with finasteride last year for about two weeks, noticed side effects immediately and quit, sex drive has never really recovered,

I went to see a derm about my acne and he agreed it is quite bad and I may need to go on accutane :( Obviously accutane is known to cause hair loss so I am sure this will just make my hair loss even worse even if it does clear me up,

I have been reading that dutasteride can help hairloss and acne so I dont know if I should think about trying this but again I am worried about the side effects after my negative experience with finasteride,

Has anyone else experienced anything like this? I am so desperate to get my body back to normal, I am constantly in the Gym and I have a healthy diet (as diet affects my acne!) This crap is just taking over my life and I dont know what to do next!

Any help would be great, thanks guys

:)

I can't really give you advice, but I know how it feels. I'm 27, I still have facial acne, I have rosacea, and I am going bald. It sucks, I know.

If your face is clear, I'd stay away from Accutane. There are other options to treat acne as well. I'm not sure that any of the cyclines (tetra, doxy, mino, etc.) are known to cause hairloss. I used doxycycline to treat rosacea, and it definitely cleared up acne, but it makes you feel sort of crappy, and its an antibiotic, and I didn't want to be on an antibiotic long term. Another thing that helps a lot with your skin is Vitamin E pills. I was taking those daily last summer, until I realized I was losing my hair, at which point I ceased to give a sh*t about my skin. Sort of let it all go now.
But, in short, I would ask your derm about antibiotic alternatives to accutane, if that is acceptable to you.

I wouldn't automatically assume that dutasteride can help acne. Some big names in the field of dermatology tested MK386 (Merck's experimental 5a-reductase type 1 inhibitor) for acne in a study two or three years ago, and it was found to be ineffective. It's doubtful that dutasteride would do any better.

For acne, reduce your carbohydrate intake, that's the only thing that really helps. Try to cut off all sugar and white flour first... if that doesn't help, eliminate wheat. Dairy is also known to cause troubles because of the pasteurization and homogenization. Those procedures actually make dairy worse because they rip all the nutrients of the milk. And remember to add good fats like extra virgin olive oil, fish oil, butter, extra virgin coconut oil and such into your diet. I bet that you meant low-fat diet with your "healthy diet". That's not really healthy, the human body needs good fat much more than it needs carbs.
