My partner is very depressed about what he says is his hair loss. He says it is thinning on top, but I do not know if it is or not as he will not let me look at his hair.

He spend hours trying to disguise it, and uses soap and water to make it look thicker, but gets depressed when it clumps together. It also does this he says when he uses hair mouse.

When he is really down he can not leave the house.

I am very worried about his depression over this at the moment.

he will not see his doctor as he says he will just tell him to pull himself together and to grow up.

I want to help him but dont know what to do.

He has been using a medication purchassed over the net. From reading up on it , it seems to work by blocking testosterone production.

He does not know if he is wasting his money but is scared to stop taking them incase they are holding it at bay.

He has his good moments about this and bad, but today he sems to have been at the lowest ever since I have known him.

What is the product? Hairloss is caused by DHT rather than testosterone, so a testosterone blocker wouldn't work (besides the fact we need testosterone to function normally). DHT is a metabolite of testosterone and most proven baldness treatments taken orally work by inhibiting the enzyme which converts Testosterone to DHT. If the tablet doesn't contain Finasteride or Dutasteride (the two drugs which currently do this) it is most likely not going to work.

bear in mind that a possible side effect of finasteride is depression (just google it), altho the depression is obv due to the hair loss, the finasteride could be exacerbating it.

a testosterone block will work indeed, not only it will make you grow more hair, but also change you into a female. lol

It contains Finasteride at about 5 times the prescription rate

This is Proscar or a generic version of the same. It contains the same active ingredient as Propecia (finasteride) but at a 5mg dose instead of 1mg. Lots of us take Proscar and split the tablets into quarters or fifths; it's cheaper than Propecia. Finasteride is not a testosterone blocker. It actually elevates testosterone levels slightly. It works by preventing the conversion of testosterone into dihydrotestosterone, another male hormone which is responsible for shortening the growth phase of, and progressively miniaturising, scalp hair follicles.

Its almost certain that this is just finasteride and the poster is confusing DHT with testosterone.

Thanks guys that explains a lot.

Main prob tho is knowing how to support him when he feels so down about it. What sort of things are the worst thing I could say/do as really want to avoid those.

Get him on the big3, he'll see results in 6-8 weeks, then have a shed, and then it will look even better after that.

finasteride
Foam
2% nizoral

Hey,

first of all I think it is very fine that your care for your boyfriend that much. He is in a deep crisis and needs your support at this time.

When I read about blocking Testosterone I was a little bit shocked since I thought he was actually taking Oral spironolactone, some heavy stuff but it seems as if he is only doing Fincar. I guess he splits up the pills into quarters so that he he takes 1.25mg each day. Nothing to worry about, done this as well though I had to switch to heavier stuff since my hairloss is too agressive. Nevertheless you can tell him that it helps and will at least slow down the loss. No money wasted.

And I don´t believe finasteride is actually causing him depressions. This is a veeerrrryyyy rare side effect. I am sure he is only depressed about his hair. You know for a man it is not just the hair which means that he looks uglier. It is a loss of a man´s personality, he sees a part of himself dying. Many hair loss sufferers are going through the same thing. Just read the "Impact of Hairloss" section of gourmetstylewellness.com. It is also a sign of ageing and marks the end of the youth for many of us.

So what can you do? There is no exact answer for this. Everyone is different, you know. I can only tell you what I would appreciate (I don´t have a girlfriend or friends who support me). You should take his problems serious, don´t tell him "Oh, it is just hair" or "People in Africa are starving". Sure, both is true, but it doesn´t help him with hair. He will think that you don´t take him serious, my mother was like that. Listen to him and his problem. Ask him whether he wants to talk about it.
What might help him when he is really down and doesn´t want to go out is a concealer like Toppik. It works by making the hair look thicker. gourmetstylewellness.com has another section dedicated to this.
Apart from that I think it would be a good idea for him to join a hairloss forum. Talking to people in the same situation really helped me a lot.

So, that´s it, here is another thread dealing with a similiar topic:

Good Luck for your boyfriend´s hair!
