Hey guys, New to the forum. In august after receiving a haircut, I started noticing the top of my hair to be thinning out a lot. Three months later, its a lot more noticeable, which I think is in part due to having longer hair. I am 21 btw:

Im pretty sure this is male pattern baldness. I am going to see a dermatologist in a few weeks, but in the meantime I think I am going to start rogaine.

I am also thinking of getting a buzz cut, how short do guys think I should go?

well there's obvious thinning on top. it's not severe yet. can't really tell where your hairline is from that pic.

starting rogaine is not an awful idea but i would just make an appt with the derm asap and have him give you a prescription for propecia.

can you take pics of your hair from the front with your hair wet and combed all the way back towards the back of your head. we need to see pics of your hairline and temples from the left, right, and a straight on view as well. also if you can take a pic of your thinning area on top- like what it looks like with your hair combed back. this is the best view for us.

then we will be more able to tell where you are on the baldness scale.

thanks.

yes, clear miniaturization going on there, cant you tell when you see hair in the shower, pillow, when combing hair too?

as for the buzz, i'd take it down to 3/4 inch to start, and go down 1/8th of an inch of a time after that till you can't see balding any more.

Seriously...stay away from rogaine until you've given propecia a good shot (at least 6 months). There's a good chance propecia alone will do the trick and you don't want to commit to rogaine for the rest of your life...it's such a pain in the ***.

In the meantime before I see a derma, what kind of shampoo do you guys recommend? I have been using head and shoulders for a few years but Im thinking it may be to rough on the hair

Your hairline and temples look fine, but the top is definitely thinning.

I would recommend Propecia or Proscar and Nizoral shampoo. But first go to see your dermatologist.

On another note: be careful when you put so much shaving cream on your face, especially in your eyes.

i agree. your front is fine, its your crown that's thinning a bit, but the good news is that the crown is easier to maintain/regrow than the front. get propecia and if u really want regrowth, get minoxidil. but remember what people were saying about having to stay with it forever if u want to keep the regrown hair! u have to stay with propecia forever too but a pill a day is a lot less hassle than applying minoxidil twice a day.

I agree, some vertex thinning is going on on your head. You should definetly take finasteride which might give you some density back or at least keep what you have. If you aren´t satisfied with the results you might add minoxidil after some time.

i don´t think that Head and Shoulders shampoo is having big influence on your hair. I personally recommend you Nizoral shampoo two times a week and some soft Baby shampoo on the rest of the week. Many people do it that way. Good luck with your hair!

Thanks for all the replies everyone. I greatly appreciate it. I have an appt to see a dermatologist this coming Monday. I will also purchase some nizoral later on this week.
