Anyone on a high dosage (1 mg per day +) want to comment?

Just wondering if anyone had experimented with higher dosages, as I heard that once you hit the 4mg plus mark you get 99% or something of DHT instead of the 90 you get with just 0.5.

Don't blast me if my figures are wrong. They're just ballpark. And apologies if this has been posted before. I've been away for awhile.

I've been on 2 mg glaxo avodart for 6 months and my hair has gotten progressively yellow and thinner to the point where I have a bald spot in the crown thats about the size of a quarter. avodart is a failure and based on eveything thats been posted on so many sites, its clear that the study that was released regarding dutasteride's merits is BULL! Thats my opinion...

It could of course be that you're very unlucky and suffering from very aggressive male pattern baldness. I did my research on Avodart, and there are plenty of testimonials out there that show improvement.

You're very right. There are so many variables for all of us that its a bit irresponsible for me to make sweeping statements. I've seen some people with modest results from avodart, though never anything that approaches the results in the 2007 twin study in Journal of cosmetic dermatology, 2007 Mar, 6(1):9-13. I'm sure everyone is sick to death about talking about these results, but a comparative difference of 18 hairs in 1cm^2 of the vertex at 6 months and 20+ at 12 months might be somewhat unrealistic (if based on anecdote, of course). Despite my poor results so far, I'm going to keep the course because I'm curious. If only I had an identical twin!

Hello Evershed,
with 2mg x day your hair became thin end yellow on ALL the scalp or only in the male pattern baldness zone?
Do you have experienced dry scalp and dry skin?
Thanks.
Andrea

Sorry for my English...

Note that even men who are castrated don't regrow their hair they have permanently lost, therefore neither would I expect this from dutasteride. Any regrowth must come from vellus hairs returning to their normal cycle.

I don't sure about this... My uncle is an urologist and says me that some patients (even 65 years old) have some regrowth in bald spots where there's no hair since ten years (with fina or dutasteride)

I think that is important to find the right hormonale profile that changes for everyone.

hi Andrea, my hair is yellowing/thinning mostly on the crown, but also diffusely towards the front. Yes, it is in the male pattern baldness area only. My hair and skin has always been slightly oily, but balanced, and this hasn't changed since avodart. A couple of notable difference I have noticed are that I don't get cystic acne around my temples around the sideburns/temple-points anymore and I have about 40% less bodyhair than before. Hormone tests 2 months ago and 3 months into treatment showed a "significant" reduction in DHT, no significant change in free-test or prolactin, but a SIGNIFICANT decrease in estradiol(doctor's words). My doctor doesn't know that I'm on 2mg of Avo, but I have to tell him next week because we're both concerned about my health.

I've read that DHT can inhibit aromatase enzyme, and this should mean that Avodart, by lowering DHT, should increase estrogen and lower SHBG. This is the opposite of my results!

I think you're very right. It might not just be a question of genetic isoenzymatic differences, but rather one of net hormonal balance. Maybe if we get enough people to get full panel hormone tests before and after treatment and report on sites like this one, we can get a clearer picture of what's going on. If anyone is under public healthcare (Canada Health Act or NHS in UK), you just have to ask for a full panel and they have to give you one.

Maybe some of us are just taking way too much!
