Hi my name is Dee, I am 39yrs old and shedding up to 300 hairs per day! This has happened to me a few years ago, I lost approx 50% of my hair & then for no reason it stopped and grew back, but not the same as it was. I had perfectly straight hair and now its curly!! I have had all of the bloods done and showed nothing. I lose hair from all over, not in patches. I do have regrowth, but its kinky, wiry little hairs that stick out all over and it looks terrible. My fringe area is now nearly completely bald and receded and my scalp is visable in the sun. I have no idea why this is happening and am so glad to have found your Forum. My Doctor thinks its stress & depression related and has put me on Luvox tablets. I have been on these before for depression. I have now read a lot of stories from ladies who are convinced that SSRI Antidepressants have caused their hair loss. I am so scared to keep taking this medication but my Doctor assures me that it will not increase my shedding....hmmm! Has anyone else experienced similar or had hair loss problems from being on SSRI Antidepressants? I also bleach my hair and wonder if that may be the cause? It is not breaking off though, each hair has a tiny, tiny root attached. Any info would be so gratefully appreciated. Many Thanks and look forward to hearing from fellow sufferers

Thank you for joining.

Have you considered the following treatments:

Rogaine for Women, Tricomin Follicle Therapy Spray, Nioxin Shampoo, Spironactalone (hormone therapy).

I would suggest getting a regime. Women tend to see much better results than men.

I wish you all the best, and as always,
GOODLUCK!

You need to get a diagnosis. This may mean having blood work done over a period of time. Your doctor's answer is too vague. Do not start any medications until you get a straighforward answer! This includes any minoxidil, etc. But if you do go with minoxidil, you should see good results. I have read that women respond significantly better to minoxidil than men.

I recommend Nizoral 1% shampoo, and a copper peptide spray (Tricomin or Folligen) and that is ALL.

Your scalp is obviously quite sensitive, and I would do whatever I could to reduce any potential irritants to the scalp that you can. The FIRST thing you need to concentrate on is some STABILITY in your scalp situation, and this means only using the mildest of shampoos and taking great care not to expose your scalp to extremes of heat or cold.

Once your scalp finds some stability, then you can re-evaluate whether or not your hair shedding was spontaneous (which can be regrown on its own) or if it was some sort of Telogen Effluvium sort of event, in which case it will regrow on its own.

Now, I am just speaking from my own opinion and not trying endorse anything here, but in lieu of anti-depressants, have you considered trying to hunt for and find a great therapist that you click with? This would require making a few visits to some that you probably WON'T click with, you have to be picky, but if you can find one you are really comfortable with, stick with it long term and try to find a behavioral solution, a REAL solution, to your anxieties instead of a prescription anti-depressant. Now, again, in the first three paragraphs I believe I can speak with some experience, but in this paragraph, I am not speaking from any sort of experience but rather giving you what my personal "hunch" would suggest.

HI. Did you read about shark cartilage tablets? Some expensive products, like the one promoted by Cheryl Baker, contain shark cartilage as the effective ingredient, with lots of other fancy stuff thrown in to make it look clever. It is supposed to be especially effective for women, but who knows. I don't know if it is made from dogfish or hammerheads, that seems to be secret. Apparently, shark species don't have bone. It all depends if you are a veggie I suppose,( I see your interests include animals, so you might not like to go for this one, you might want to find out about responsible fishing policy, but there is the info for what it may be worth to you). Holland & Barratt sell it in UK, so similar high street health stores may sell it in Australia. I can't advise you on the anti-depressants, but my impression is that all drugs have some negative effect on the body, even pain killers. In time I hope you will find out what works best and be able to pass your experience on to others here.
Good luck.
