Season 2 of Stranger Things was significantly-above average television, I enjoyed it a lot. It was original, it had some good world building, some good characters and dialogue, some good laughs, some good chills, and the story and character arcs worked coherently. I recommend it.
However, one scene at the end of season 2 really pissed me off.
The nerds are attending a dance at the middle school, and one of the boys has just fixed his hair in an attempt to get better girls. This is meant to be an 1980s-nerd trying to fix up his hair to look cool, that makes sense storywise !
It's failing for him (as it would have in reality), the girls are preemptively rejecting away, running away from him while laughing and scorning while he's approaching. He doesn't even get to ask them out, except for one that he did get to ask to dance, and she got angry and walked away in disgust with her friends. He ends up sitting by himself at the end of the gym, it's all very realistic.
However, at the end one of the girls who is older than him (friends with his brother) feels sorry for him and dances with him. She tells him that girls their age are stupid, but that when they wisen up and get older, they will realize that he's a catch. His time will come:
I was annoyed by this scene yesterday as it undermined the realism of the rest of the scene. Women in fact do not get change much as they get older, they always care about looks. I thought it was cheesy. However, as I write it down this morning I realize that it may in fact be incredibly realistic, because that's what people say and believe. The show isn't saying that the nerd will get girls when he's older, the show is saying that other characters believe he will. That is how it works in the real world. Myself, I've been hearing that my time with women will come for nearly twenty years now.
