Have a piece that's almost black and I wear medium brown, so the difference in color is significant.

How do I go about lightening the unit to a more appropriate color?

You can leave it in the sun for a few days, that will lighten it. I got a very dark black wig once that was meant to be 1B, put it out in the full hot Aussie sun for a week and, hey, presto, it gradually lightened up sufficiently to be passable as dark brown. This was in summer though, not sure how it would work in winter.

I dyed a piece too dark once, and "oops" did an excellent job of removing the color, without damage. I would plan on recoloring though, if you choose to use it.
