You can take it with or without food or drink, makes no difference.

That isn't true. I believe Bryan created or sourced a graph showing the differences of finasteride absorption on an empty and full stomach. It showed some finasteride was never absorbed (if i remember correctly) on a full stomach.

But yes, you can take it with juice.

Really? This might be really important so please post it.

Id love to hear Bryan's thoughts. So, what is the best way to take finasteride? Just plain water and no food I guess? What is the WORST way to take it?

In a study of 15 healthy young subjects, the mean bioavailability of Finasteride 5 mg tablets was 63% (range 34 to 108%), based on the ratio of area under the curve (AUC) relative to an intravenous (IV) reference dose. Maximum Finasteride plasma concentration averaged 37 ng/mL (range, 27 to 49 ng/mL) and was reached 1 to 2 hours postdose. Bioavailability of Finasteride was not affected by food.

"Following administration of a single 0.5 mg dose of a soft gelatin capsule, time to peak serum concentrations of dutasteride occurs within 2 to 3 hours. Absolute bioavailability in five healthy subjects is approximately 60% (range 40% to 94%). When the drug is administered with food, the maximum serum concentrations were reduced by 10% to 15%. This reduction is of no clinical significance."

>>What are they saying here ??? Does it mean that if we take dutasteride with food, the medication will remain in our body longer? Even though they say there is no clinical significance, would it be better to have the medication in our body 10-15% longer ?<<

No, I think they're clearly saying that less of the drug is absorbed (or "bioavailable") when taken along with food. For just a second or two I also wondered (as you seemed to do) if they meant that the absorption of the drug is merely SLOWED DOWN for a while but still eventually gets absorbed; however, the fact that it has such a long half-life and yet the peak levels in the blood are still reduced strongly suggests to me that there's that extra percentage of it that never does get absorbed, when it's taken with food.

This is obviously with dutasteride, but I assume the conclusion can be expressed for both dutasteride and finasteride?

I personally have no idea. I do think it is important that we settle this though.

Why would you assume that? I just showed you the published prescribing information for finasteride. It said very clearly that finasteride's absorption is not affected if taken with food. You would rather trust a study conducted on a completely different drug? Would you assume that the same can be said for advil or v****, or any drug for that matter? This is how rumors get started over the internet...
