I have been thinking about getting a hair transplant for these last few years but my understanding is that you should take finesteride after to maintain the hair. Would minoxidil be enough? I feel like I've been getting side effects from finesteride. I had a friend get a hair transplant and he says he wasn't advised to take finesteride after. how's this possible?

No, u will lose the rest of non transplanted hair with years.

That's a normal practice from hair transplant doctors. They do it so you have to get multiple transplant and they can gain more money in the future

If you don’t wanna take Finasteride/Dutasteride, then don’t bother with a hair transplant, period! Finasteride/Dutasteride are mandatory for a long lasting, maximised hair transplant.

Unless you have high and prefect horseshoe fringe which has already stopped balding, there is little to no point to getting the transplant unless you just want to look good for a handful of years to get hitched. Men with large heads especially, Turks, Indians, Semites and other whites who typically have large amounts of body hair should be incredibly careful and aware before doing this. The other issue is that many people do not heal well from the scarring and scar tissue both where taken and where placed. Often only a couple of hairs might take from a multi-hair plug. You can see the remaining circles that haven't filled in. Derma rolling is required on the entire scalp essentially forever to try to get the plugs to integrate as well as possible. I am a big believer in cosmetic surgery but this is multilation and many people regret the scarring, pain and disfigurement that they incur. If you do it, either finasteride or duta is necessary for life.

has dermarolling shown to be almost as effective? Right now the dermatologist prescribed be minoxidil only because finasteride was giving me side effects but I'm not sure if I'm convinced it's enough

I get side effects on finasteride too but I ignore them and you should too.

Derma rolling is more so to heal the scarring on the head afterwards as well as to hopefully make the plugs integrate fully. Otherwise, there can be a pronounced cobblestone effect on top because none of the plugs heal so as to fit into the space at the same height or altitude, what have you. They might still grow but you can feel it when you comb. Some people might have lifetime sensitivity in the donor area where it hurts to even comb it. This is mutilation no different necessarily from SRS surgery. It's permanent unless we learn how to grow hair in a dish and then transplant it. Let him who has ears, listen. Tread with extreme caution. Best of luck.
