I am considering taking proscar to help combat my male pattern thinning but I am concerned about the side effects and have read that there are ways to reduce or eliminate the sexual side effects. I am a 26 year old male, single and I certainly don't want to lose my libido! So I have a few questions regarding the mechanism of proscar/finasteride/propecia, and estrogen types and aromatase inhibitors.
1. What is the actual mechanism is propecia/proscar, which causes a depletion in libido? I have heard that it is the estrogen rising side effect which causes a lowering of libido... but is that all there is to it? Does DHT play a role in libido?
2. I have read that aromatase inhibitors, which block the conversion of tesosterone to estrogen, causing an increase in free testosterone levels, when taken alongside proscar, can counter the sexual side effects. But, there are three types of estrogen, E1 , E2 and E3. Do aromatase inhibitors block all three types of estrogens?
3. There are three types of estrogens, are they all linked with the sexual side effects associated with proscar, or just one of them?
4. DIM is a supplement that increases phase 2 liver detoxification, and eliminates 'bad' E2, carcinogenic estrogen. Grape seed extract is also an estrogen blocker. But how do these natural supplements compare to aromatase inhibitors in efficiancy?
I am actually a nutritional therapist, but have been out of practice for many years after taking up other study...so I 'should' know these answers but don't! So I'd be very grateful for any help!
