Diffuse Thinner - Beginning My Finasteride Journey

Hey all. I'm 30 years old, full head of hair but diffusely thinning all over. Still not at all noticeable when dry, and I tend to keep my hair fairly long and it grows fairly fast, but I've noticed a gradual drop in density over the past three years or so, and not helped by a barber mentioning it to me recently. Probably somewhere between NW1 and NW2, with no bald patches, just slightly receded temples, which I've always had to some degree but they've definitely gradually got ever so slightly bigger.

My dad was bald by 33 (though inexplicably he's no idea when he started balding) and combined with the fact I spent December - March with an *exceedingly* itchy head and noticeably shedding quite heavily (plenty of hair on hand whilst shampooing, applying hair wax, generally running hand though hair), it certainly focussed my mind to do something about it. I believe my dad was a diffuse thinner too but hard to know if I'm just a slower diffuse thinner or whether I'm going to suffer from sudden loss in the next couple of years, which you hear about others suffering from. I'm already a bit of a silver fox at 30, which my father wasn't, so perhaps we're following slightly different lines. My maternal grandfather was a silver fox, with all of his hair when he died - so perhaps I'm somewhere in the middle?

About 3 weeks ago I started taking 0.5mg of generic finasteride. I've had zero side effects and pleased to say my itching has reduced by about 70-80% (a triumph in itself, as it really was awful!). However, my shedding has continued, fairly consistently, maybe slightly more so, but hard to tell. My right temple seems to be taking the biggest hit and I still feel an itch here.

Obviously too hard to say if it's working at this stage but I presume the reduced itch is a positive sign (though not completely disappeared on the crown or temples)? Though the continued shedding is a bit disheartening, but do those things combined still provide any positive signs? I'm happy to continue taking it for the full year and not expecting miracles, but I've heard good things about diffuse thinning users, and I certainly have full-head hair coverage to start with which I hear may help.

We're all different but there's often patterns. Anyone been in a similar position and care to share how it turned out for them?

Hey. Your story sounds very similar to mine. I was greying in my 20s and maintained a nw1 with unnoticeable (to others) diffuse thinning through age 33 when I started 1mg daily propecia. I've been on propecia (doctor perscribed) now for 2 years and am clearly below baseline at nw2 with a bald spot at the crown and an unevenly receding hairline. My density has probably taken a 30% hit during this time. Not the outcome I hoped for.

As you said, we are all different and your experience may varry. I can't say for sure how my hairloss would have progressed without propecia, but I have a nagging thought that it only accelerated things in my case. I have a bottle of avodart sitting on my counter as I contemplate switching over, afraid of an even less desirable outcome.

I would suggest dropping finasteride after 6 months if your hairloss hasn't stabilized.

I suggest giving it a year. My hair was sh*t at 5 months but looks like it's making room for progress at month 7, good luck man!
