Does minoxidil work on the temples?

I started finasteride 8 months ago....nothing to report, just a constant shed, but under 100 hairs/day (which is normal). While I have a straight hairline, the temples are obviously thinning (one of the reasons for finasteride) and I can see more and more scalp over time. So, bought some minoxidil, but it says to only use on crown. I still may wait a full year on finasteride to start minoxidil, but lately have been thinking more and more to try it out for 4 months to see if I respond. Thoughts?

I'd be interested to hear some feedback on this as well. I've read reports/reviews that say minoxidil will sometimes work on the hairline. Apparently during testing it was only used on the vertex/crown and thus the reason it is only claimed to work there.

I think it's a YMMV (your mileage may vary).

Captain Combover encouraged me to start using it all over the thinning areas, as he had his best results on the temples and top forward of the vertex. I applied it strictly to the crown for two months then switched to applying it all over for the past month. I started finasteride and minoxidil at the same time so it's too hard to tell what's doing what, but I've gotten decent regrowth all over - on the crown bald spot, the very top of the head, even on the temples a little bit although the progress there has lagged the rest of the head to date. Maybe a month of use on the temples is too early to tell, so I'll have more to say in a month or two.

Just be careful how much minoxidil you end up using when applying it all over. I probably doubled or tripled the amount of Rogaine foam used the first few times, to probably 60-80 mL, and felt pretty sick and once almost passed out. minoxidil had seemed pretty inert to me until that point but at some amount of exposure you can definitely feel strong sides, though in my case they were very transitory (gone by the morning). If you decide to apply it all over, I recommend starting at the very top of the head, some of the extra will run down toward the back to the crown and toward the front to the hairline, then rub it all in so you don't have to apply much more to those lower parts, that should minimize the amount you need to use to get all-over coverage.

I don't think there's really any danger in doing it if you can keep the total amount of minoxidil you use to a reasonable level. Even though the clinical effectiveness may not have been demonstrated in those areas, burning through an extra $5-10 of minoxidil each month is a gamble I'm willing to take.

It works for some people, and could feasibly work anywhere that you still have hair (i.e., if your temples are slick bald, it is very unlikely that minoxidil will regrow anything). You may want to give the finasteride a full year before starting with the minoxidil, as some people do get regrowth from just finasteride between 8-12 months.

If you have already bought the minoxidil, so why not to try it out yourself to see if it works for you? It works for me on both on the crown and temples, I also have to say it works on the crown better than temples.

Hi,

I have been on Regaine foam for 6 weeks now strictly in the temples and down the side of my head (temples I guess). I am unsure whether it is working but every time I go in the lift where I live there is a light directly above the mirror. I lift up my hair and look at my temples and I can see more and more (or so I think) fine blonde hairs growing in. I think it can work there if you have a bit of hair to regrow as if you think about the product it is increasing blood flow and diameter of the follicles so if you do have fine hair there then it will thicken it up potentially making it terminal. Well, I hope so anyway. I have also been on Saw palmetto Since Christmas but I am unsure whether this is working or not!
