Does spironolactone S5 Cream Need to be Refrigerated?

S5 cream says that it should be kept at room temperature or be refrigerated. I'll typically purchase the 3-pack, keep one in my bathroom, and the other 2 in the fridge until needed. However, I'll be gaining a roommate shortly and I really don't want to keep any in the fridge if I don't have to.

Does anybody know if there is any impact to NOT keeping s5 cream in the fridge and instead keeping it at room temp? Is there any benefit to keeping it in the fridge?

Colder temperatures slow the decay rate of basically everything. It's just to help preserve it. Its also kind of nice to put a cool cream on your head :tellme:

i understand that, but what i'm wondering is: does s5 decay quickly enough as to where i'll need to worry about it losing its efficacy over the course of 3 months at room temperature?

I keep extra s5 jars in the fridge. If you want to keep it out, keep one in the bathroom - the one you use and other 2 in your room.
I'm saying that because temp in the bathroom is usually higher especially when you are taking long warm showers.
If you will keep those jars less than 6 months in room temp it should be fine but I feel better when I keep my extra jar of spironolactone in the fridge.
If you don't want your roommate to know about spironolactone you can take off labels and keep it buried deep in your fridge. I'm sure he won't touch it. You can write on the jars DANGER - DO NOT EAT. that way you don't have to worry he will touch it...
But around 6 months should be fine unless your room gets pretty hot.

You go through jar of s5 every month? How much do you apply and how many times a day.

One jar lasts me around 3 months - I apply it 2 times a day.

Its a bit offtopic(sorry if i am derailing the thread Rcom)
Hi im thinking about adding an antiandrogen like topical spironolactone to my regimen but i can't get the cream version so im asking if liquid spironolactone is effective as spironolactone cream??

I wanna make a weekly batch of 5% topical LIQUID spironolactone but i can't find ethanol or propylene glycol
This is my alternative:-
I think ill use glycerine(10ml) for dissolving the spironolactone tabs
and isopropyl alcohol(30ml) for penetration. I will be making weekly batches with about 200mg spironolactone tabs.

Any advice/sugesstion/correction for me??

Thanks rcom. That was my thought process as well -- it wouldn't be the end of the world, but ideally, i wouldn't like to have my roommate knowing that I use it, and then by removing the label, I would put it at risk for being either a.) eaten, or b.) thrown away. I'll try using the method you described (keeping the extras in my room) -- is there any indication that the product is degrading (visually or via odors of any sort??)

To answer your follow-up question: i just did the math and a jar only lasts me roughly 1 month...and I only apply it once a day (at night). It sounds like I likely a.) may apply it over a larger surface area (frontal + crown), and/or b.) I may apply heavier doses?? please advise if this is inappropriate use. i'll admittedly go semi-heavy on the coat I apply, but that's mostly due to the fact that I have a decent amount of hair still in the areas I'm applying it to today, so it's very difficult to gauge the application and to ensure that everything i'm applying finds its way onto the scalp and not caught on the hair shafts instead.

All you need is a thin layer of spironolactone. I also apply it only on my hairline and crown but mostly hairline as my crown is pretty solid. And yes it's dificult to apply it to the crown. I part my hair and then apply it to the clown otherwise it would get on the hair and not on the skin.

Other advice I can give you is keep extra hard of spironolactone in a dark place.

I actually never used liquid spironolactone but I know some people on different forums who got better results from liquid 2% spironolactone than 5% spironolactone cream. That was back in day when Dr. Lee was in business.

I think it should be fine but you can order
propylene glycol online.

@rcom
So my math for the spironolactone strength is correct??
200mg spironolactone tabs grinded and then added to 40ml of alcohol??

Yes that's correct.
By the way, isopropyl alcohol won't dissolve spironolactone you need to add ethanol alcohol to dissolve it.

I could not find any ethanol or propylene so i went for glycerine and isopropyl alcohol. I can't buy anything from online.

How did you use it??
pre or post minoxidil??

Also what is your proper regimen??

Ethanol is drinking alcohol. Higher alcohol percentage, better solvent. I think liquid would be easier to apply for me as well, but would definitely like something already made so I don't have to mess around with proper dosing and mess of creating own solution in my bathroom. So for now its just S5 cream in the morning when I can and every night. I definitely get a little tingling on my scalp and less itch when its applied.

That's correct lasysmanfelpz.

Nadester,
You can try to mix it with Isopropyl and glycerine but I'm not sure if you will be able to dissolve it. If it won't be able to dissolve it doesn't make sense to use it as spironolactone probably won't be absorbed.
Where do you live? Ask in your local pharmacy if you could be able to buy Propylene Glycol (PG). It should be inexpensive. You can buy one gallon of PG for $20.

Apply minoxidil first then wait around 15 min or longer for it to dry a little bit then apply spironolactone.

When it comes to mess in the bathroom, well it shouldn't be too much of mess if you make it in the sink. But please remember it may stink as hell when mixing it with alcohol.
