downsides to surgery? thoughts on Bosley.

I am giving serious consideration to Bosley's surgical hair restoration:

I've read other people's responses saying you'll great getting surgery done. What causes people to regret this? What are the downsides?

And do you any of you know anything specific about Bosley and if that is a good option?

Yes, stay away from Bosley or any other chain. Your results will be mediocre at best. Horrible at worst. They are all about marketing and nothing about quality.

Check out http://www.bosleymedical.com. They have ruined many lives.

Go with an independent surgeon recommended on this site. Tell us where you live, and we can recommend some good surgeons. Not that geography should hinder your search for this life altering experience.

Bosley even has the audacity to charge much more than the best independent surgeons out there.

and what about NHI?

Is there a list of "recomended" surgeons/facilities on this site somewhere?

I had a bad experience with a defunct group called Elliot Thomas and don't want to be scamed again....

Contributing Physicians: Dr. Glenn Charles, Dr. James DeYarman, Dr. Paul McAndrews, Dr. Paul Rose, Dr. Ron Shapiro, Dr. Robert True

I am familiar with them all but Dr. McAndrews. They are all good surgeons.

I have heard nothing but good about Dr. Bernstein. He tends to be a little more conservative than others, but that's not necesarily bad.

Dr. Ron Shapiro is considered one of the best in the world.

Other good surgeons are: Dr. Cooley, Hasson & Wong, Dr. Keene (my doctor), Dr. Epstein, Dr. Feller. There are others.

I'm was not familiar with NHI, but it looks like Dr. Bernstein was associated with it at one time. The key is to go with a specific doctor that you KNOW does good work. Don't ever go with a "group" of physicians where you don't know which one will actually be performing the surgery.

my first procedure was at bosley. not only was it $9 per graft, the Doctor did not angle the hairs right, so i have a bunch of really untamed hairs in front that go against the others. It still looks natural, just messed up. I hope they change directions eventually.

There are no specific places other than forums like these that talk about the pros and cons of doctors. You can't really trust anyone but the patients in this industry. Even then you have to be carefull with shills. A few doctors have risen up to show consistent quality.

Do a google search on my name "Gorpy". You'll find another site I post on.

Is there anyone out there who is generally disappointed that they had the surgery done at all? Are there downsides that I should be aware of and/or research?

There are always downsides and risks. They are minimized by choosing a top level doctor, but can still occur.

Some of the downsides/problems are:

- Shocking out so much hair that your net gain of hair after a transplant is minimal.
- Experiencing a stretched donar scar.
- Experiencing permanent donar area shock loss. Rare, but it does happen.
- Continued male pattern baldness that will result in the necessity of another hair transplant.
- Dissappointment with the density level.

There are many other "potential" problems, most of which are rare. Too long to list. Mahair has a comprehensive list he posted a while back.
