For me it's hard as my family don't really understand what I'm going through at all...
Even my dad who is bald says that he just "got on with things" and "didn't let it bother him"

My other famil think I'm overreacting and tell me it's on the inside that counts.

Anyone else having trouble making people understand just how damn hard this is?!

They grew up in a time when people were less shallow. It's cyclical. If you look back to the 17+18th centuries, people were really flamboyant and wore wigs and stuff. You were judged on your apperance. People are again judged by their appearances these days. When your dad was young and dating (if they really even can call that dating back then) things were different. It's a really bad time to be losing your hair.

No offense but this is clearly incorrect if it is intended to show why hairloss affects people of our generation worse than our parents. I dont know how old JDW is, but ill wager his dad was probably young and appearance-concerned in the sixties and seventies, a time when a bald head was literally considered heinous by all because long flowing thick locks were considered to be the most attractive then, hippies and thick haired rebels ruled a lot of popular culture. If anything, I think now in 2006 thanks to more bald celebrities and the fact that most people find hippies to be irritating assholes these days, having a bald head, although maybe not considered attractive, is looked upon with much less disgust than it would have been in the sixties and seventies, hence I think it is much easier to be bald now than it was then.

I would prefer to be a bad smelly, rot hairy hippie than a baldy consulter.

certainly not fair. wait til I post my photos up that I've been talking about in another thread and you'll see just how "not fair" life can be and in such a short space of time...

I guess anyone has a certain detachment from any problem in the world though don't they?

I know exactly what you mean.. as far as they are concerned.. nothing can be done about it.. so they just try to help you deal with it. I think it's very tough for them too because they can see what you're going through but can't do anything to help..

I never refer to my appearance to anybody anymore, even around family and close friends. In my opinion talking about your own apperance is vain and I certainly have no reason for vanity.

But I think my family especially see's my avoiding of this subject as a reason to placate me by telling me how "cute and adorable I am". I suppose this is meant to raise my spirits. My spirits are fine I just don't look good and that's something I have to deal with personally and "buttering me up" wont help. I almost feel bad for my family in a way.
It must be hard seeing this boy who just a few years ago WAS so adorable and seemingly full of life. And it's not even that I'm not full of life right now it's just that I don't look like I am.

So I'm 20 and look as though I'm 30, that is certianly not adorable. When I go in for job interviews my mom will say "A good looking kid like you will get hired no problem". *Sigh*... okay thanks mom.

I haven't been to the UK in almost 10 years, but when I was there, I notice how much hairloss there is there. Either British people have bad genes, or guys tend not to do much about it. Either way, it's much more common there. I almos tfelt like I could take my hat off there. In fact I had to when I was on a tour o fthe palace of westminster and I sat in on the mclibel case... So there are worse places you could be. Imagine it like being a small boobed girl in LA where everyone has breast implants.. That would be far worse (assuming you were that shallow to want breast implants)...

Excuse me, but you can´t compare small boobs to hair loss. First of all, a breast transplant is a safe operation. You never hear about a ruined life because of a bad operation. It is also much cheaper than hair transplant. Last but not least a girl´s boobs don´t matter to the vast majority of males. A girl has to be slim and have a pretty face and that´s it. Hair loss DOES matter as we all know.

Plenty of women have had their lives ruined by bad implant surgery. Some have even died! I'm sure that there are many flat chested women who are as effected by their boobs as you are by your hair. Its the female equivilent!
However I would say m.p.b is slightly worse because you dont have to walk around with your boobs on display all day (Unfortunatley :D ). But there is no hiding a bald head in most circumstances.
What about a hat? you might say but I never wore a cap/beanie etc for the first 25yrs of my life and I hate the way that I am forced to wear one now. Also who wears a hat indoors? an Idiot? but thats exactly what I'm doing right now.
