It is kind of sad to me that this is such a real occurrence and yet rarely discussed.

There are many members on this forum that have experienced Telogen Effluvium from these 5-AR inhibitors, some of which have reported that it became chronic when they failed to discontinue the medication. This is of course including myself.

If you're experiencing Telogen Effluvium from androgen inhibitors, then you will always be playing catch up.

So... are there any experienced members on here that have recommendations for taking these medications with a less of a chance of getting Telogen Effluvium from them? Here are my thoughts -

Telogen Effluvium only occurs when there is a drastic physiological insult to the body. surgery, severe injury or illness, AND one of the inciting factors listed frequently is - HORMONAL CHANGES.

@Swoop and @Dench57 and @hellouser AND any of the more knowledgeable users on here -

do you think that microdosing finasteride or dutasteride MIGHT work to inhibit enough androgen activity in the scalp and ALSO prevent the likelihood of Telogen Effluvium, given that the physiological change is not as severe?

I realize there is no real answer to this, but I really want some opinions. Many may jump to the conclusion that they are losing massive amounts of hair on finasteride AND experiencing scalp inflammation because of AR upregulation... BUT, it could simply be Telogen Effluvium.

I don't know, but I tried micro-dosing finasteride (about 0.5mg) ONCE A WEEK... and I got sides. I hopped off that poison though. Things are pretty much back to norm.

May I ask - sexual sides?

Hi buckthorn,

I got accelerated hairloss from RU, as well.

I am getting H&W topical liposomal finasteride soon. (at a reduced dosage of 0.3% not the 2.5%)

I'm a bit nervous as I had increased loss on RU, but they are different drugs...

Why don't you try this?

I believe that I have finally isolated the cause of my Telogen Effluvium after removing just about everything else I started doing around the same time my Telogen Effluvium started. I started off with finasteride at .25mg E3D and sometimes E2D and had no Telogen Effluvium, but when I increased the dose to .5mg ED I got Telogen Effluvium and it seems like my male pattern baldness increased as well. I went back down to .25mg E2D about two weeks ago. I suspect that for some reason a higher dose is completely ineffective for me in terms of DHT inhibition, maybe my body just produces more DHT or something, idk. I'll let you know if decreasing the dose helps at all.

I have already breaks on finasteride for 1 or 2 months to check if the Telogen Effluvium had finasteride or not.

And during the period when finasteride was not taken hair fall continued normally but when I do pull test, I noticed that I was not losing almost more hair at the ends of the head (behind the ears, neck).

When I'm back on finasteride 1 mg daily after one week or a few days my hair starts to fall especially at the ends with the white bulb. (Telogen Effluvium sign).

sorry for my bad english.

The members change, the same misinformed ranting does not. Look at the charts associated with DHT reduction in relation to finasteride dosing. The reduction in DHT is nearly the same with "micro-dosing" with .25 mg through to 1 mg and 5 mg. Are you suggesting there is a mystery additive that is giving sides at full dose?

The other point that needs to be attacked is attempting to judge hair loss changes in weeks, not months and years.

I can count the number of reasonable posters over the last decade on one hand.

My advice to the desperate individuals finding their way here through google searches: Get on dutasteride .5 mg, RU if so inclined, minoxidil 5% and move on until bigger news breaks, like many of us have. I too thought I was doomed when I couldn't maintain an erection after using finasteride. I also associated any loss with Telogen Effluvium and finasteride/minoxidil/keto. Fast-forward to the point I grew up, my penis works great. Am I as horny as I was when 14? No, thankfully. The facts are sexual issues associated with finasteride use is in the low single digits. My hypothesis rooted in some sense is hopping on and off hormone altering drugs every new moon is not good. The only time I had loss over the last decade is when I felt an overwhelming need to rid myself of "poison".

My experience is of course anecdotal.

This is an orphan thread. The best bet is to use anti-inflammatories and to have a plan in place beforehand as to what to do if any shed becomes untenable. I don't know because I never shed from minoxidil of either type or from finasteride or dutasteride, which I used jointly for several years at standard dosaging. I didn't expect sheds either because nobody was out looking for reasons not to take reductase inhibitors or minoxidil. The virulence against both of these meds is staggering to me. If they cause hair loss, it should be of the Telogen Effluvium type and recoverable unless this is simply a case of DHT basically being too robust for anything to work. I know that essentially nothing except min/finasteride and dandruff shampoos work for males so avoiding any of these is a road to nowhere.

The owner of the site believes that sheds are generally benevolent and I feel this way too, having had my own Telogen Effluvium shed to NW7 from using spironolactone. Everything bounced back and improved immensely but I stayed with my meds regardless because I knew and know that they all grow hair or facilitate the regrowth thereof. Maybe folks need to practice beforehand with fibers or use a piece for a while. We can always claim a temporary medical condition if the embarrassment of wearing a wig is too much but people aren't likely to say much lest one have cancer. Stopping treatment during a shed appears to never work though.
