Hey guys,

I have just noticed my hairline heading north (peach fuss hairs) and want to put a stop to it ASAP. I am going to see my derm this week for the first time, but was interested what people suggest is a good way to stop things very early on.

Thanks.

I suggest you get on finasteride in one form or another as soon as you can. I am taking 1/4 fincar (generic proscar) every day and it costs me about 7 bucks each month. If you have good insurance see if your Doctor will prescribe proscar which has 5mg finasteride in it instead of Propecia which only has 1mg and costs the same price.

If finasteride works for you it should slow down the recession or even stop it for a bit. You may experience increased shedding in the first year so make sure you are prepared for that should it happen. For more info check the stickies in the shedding forum.

Good luck

I suggest that before you just jump on drugs that mess with your natural hormones that you get some advice from a\your derm.. finasteride/proscar can have some very serious side affects that you may not be aware of, so only take it if your derm recommends

Things like sticking to a good diet , and good scalp health, use medicated shampoos such as Nizoral, and T-Gel before trying any drugs.

What advice could a derm possibly have? Unless he/she has your entire medical history and within it are details of some kind of disorder that will clash with the finasteride (if such a disorder exists), then the derm will have no advice of any worth for or against going on finasteride. You have to try the drugs before you know how you will react. In my experience the derm is most likely going to be poorly informed and you're better off going with the vast knowledge base that exists at places like this on the internet. Of course you should still keep your appointment, but don't be duped by the diploma on the wall into thinking that he/she knows best. You'll end up bald if you are dazzled by qualifications.

If its simply your temples that are receding and you want to get an early jump then I would go with topical finasteride, spironolactone. Some guys might jump on you for starting hairloss treatments so early but there are many who had wished they had started treatments for male pattern baldness earlier then they did.

finasteride is the number one proven treatment and side effects are rare and usually mild and intermittent for those that do get them. Just because you are a fraid of getting on finasteride doesn't mean you need to try and sway other people's opinions by citing "serious" side effects. Besides finasteride completely leaves your body within a few days, making quitting it due to sides an available option.

I'm not exactly how far along your hairloss is, but if you are only seeing some minor signs of recession and aren't looking to be heading towards a definite widow's peak or bald spot, then I would just recommend that you use Nizoral shampoo twice a week, and perhaps a copper peptide spray (Tricomin or Folligen) daily.
