Getting My First Hair System. Where To Order + Question

Greetings!

I am a young man from Sweden who wants to get a hair system. I am thinning in the crown, and the hairline is receding as well.

The plan is to order a custom hair system, and check if my local hair club are willing to install it and do the maintenance. If not, I will have to do it myself.

So I would be happy to hear some advice and/or experiences when it comes to what place to order from. Currently I am considering Northwest Lace, which seems to be a good alternative.

Question: The local hair club claims that their customers come in for maintenance every 4 weeks. However, when I see videos on YouTube and read on forums, it seems that there is way more maintenance than this when doing it on your own. So what is the difference? Do the hair clubs use a stronger glue?

I highly appreciate every answer!

Hi Petter

NWL is a good option. I am going to quote my own post about the Hair Club methodology below. The place you are talking about may not be Hair Club, but they seem to be using the same methodology. But yes, basically they use a cyanoacrylic glue (superglue) which lasts a month. They do nearly all the maintenance, although you may have to re-do the hairline mid-month. It sounds an attractive idea, but in my view it is better to do your own maintenance more frequently, and to be in control of your own system. Here is my old post:

I wear a hair system, and I started off with a system from a HCM-style chain. Now I buy my hairpieces on the Net and do my own maintenance. I think hair systems are a good solution for lots of people, but it is best to avoid the HCMs of this world.

HCM's method is to glue the system on for a month at a time with what is essentially superglue. That has 3 effects - first, the system has to be very robust to survive being on your head for 4 weeks solid. Because it has to be very robust it cannot be one of the delicate lace systems which are the most undetectable. Instead, HCM systems (especially their entry-level systems) have coarse easily detectable bases. To make up for that they make them very high density (ie tons of hair) so you can't see the base. The result is the opposite of what any experienced hairpiece wearer would recommend for maximum undetectability, namely a delicate base and light hair density. Ergo HCM pieces are pretty easily detected, certainly to the touch and often to the sight, especially after you have been wearing them for a month solid. That is not what you want if you are a young guy in the dating market, and you don't have to settle for that.

Second effect - you have no control. The superglue is designed to be taken off by the salon only. You are totally tied to the salon for everything. If your stylist is off sick on the day of your monthly appointment, you're in a state of fear that the substitute will screw up your system. If something goes wrong - eg the piece comes loose - you're frantic.

Third effect - linked to the second, it simply isn't healthy to wear a hairpiece for 4 weeks solid. You wouldn't wear the same pair of underpants for 4 weeks, and wearing a piece is not much different. So of course there will be pimples and rashes and yuck and smells.

It is really not that difficult to do a template and buy your own hairpieces on the Net. It is a small fraction of the price, you get a far better product, and you're totally in control. That is what most younger hair wearers are doing. I keep my piece on for a week at a time. You may also be able to get somewhere local to help you get started, depending where you are based. If you want more details of this option, please ask.

Hope this is helpful.

I am also new here Petter and also from Sweden (Lund). I just ordered my hair piece on Thursday last week through the Aderans office in Malmö. Which place did you go to? After reading for about 1 month on different forums, it appears to me that Noah’s approach is the optimal way to go (it is evident from the posts as well that his knowledge in this is strong). However, I decided to first get someone professional do it for me at the start, to then later switch to a DIY routine and order hairpieces online (Northwest lace and Toplace seem to be popular choices).
