Hey,
After incorporating Dutasteride into my regimen during late summer 2022 (I started with it once a week while taking Finasteride on the other days and now use Dutasteride 3x a week and Finasteride 4x a week) I was hoping to regain some of the hair that had slowly receded after about seven years on Finasteride (I’m getting close to 9 years now). I can also add that I had very good reactions to finasteride when I started it - no sides and very good regrowth. I also started applying liquid Minoxidil a couple of months later (winter 2022). I’d never had so much hair as I did about half a year after starting taking min (around summer 2023; I was so happy and didn’t even think about my hair loss.
However, during the winter of 2023, I began experiencing an itchy scalp and started shedding hair – something I’d never encountered before. To this day I lose a lot of hair while showering and my hair appears much thinner than before, especially during the last week where the front of my hairline looks visibly thinner. I switched to foam Minoxidil about three weeks ago, thinking the alcohol in the liquid might be irritating my scalp, but the issue persists. I’ve just gone back to liquid minoxidil in case the accelerated loss lately is because of the minoxidil change (the itchiness hasn’t gotten worse after changing back to liquid min).
I’m starting to suspect that Dutasteride might be the problem. I think it started at the same time as Dutasteride reached full effectiveness in my body (taking it once a week, I guess a year makes sense). I continue to lose hair, my scalp itches, I have dandruff, my skin is drier and I occasionally get pimples on my forehead (I’ve never had any skin issues or pimples before). And here’s another weird thing; my eyebrows itch and shed. They’re so much thinner than they used to. If it’d worked, it shouldn’t haven’t gotten much worse as I’m getting close to three years starting dutasteride.
Has anyone experienced their hair looking worse after switching to Dutasteride and then improved it by going back to taking Finasteride daily? Did it work for you? I’m already planning to do it today as I’m getting desperate. Going fully (7x week) on dutasteride seems scary as 3x doesn’t seem to work at all.
Tl;dr: Added dutasteride 1x week with finasteride after I started to loose efficiency having been seven years on finasteride. Also started with Minoxidil a couple of months later. Had massive regrowth, but started losing hair again about a year in on dutasteride. I suspect it’s dutasteride that is the culprit and I’m thinking of going back fully to finasteride (and staying on Min).
Appreciate your help.
