Hi all,

I've just joined this forum as I am having a bit of a meltdown where my hair is concerned. My hair has always been unruly so in order to keep it in a style I liked I started using a ghd. It started off as a few times a week and now it is a few times a day. I have bad split ends... this I know. However, I laughed at everyone telling me it was going to fall out. Now the smile is on the other side of my face because now my once thick hair is no more. I have been tying my hair up or brushing it and I will notice a patch in my scalp. Not a huge patch or anything but noticeable. Now I have quite a few. Its not a bald patch... well i dont think it is... is it? U can just see my scalp and it looks... well... thin.

I'm not sure if it's because of my excessive hair straightening or if I am on the road to female baldness. I'm going to see my doctor later but would appreciate any advice that anyone can offer me.

Thanks in advance,
VW

Re: Advice needed.... please help me

hair styling does not cause any permanent hair loss, if you pull on your hair (which the straighteners can do) you can have what is called traction alopecia which sorts itself out, saying that it shouldn't be a problem with GHDs but hair straightening can thin the hair as well but again it won't make the hair itself grow thinner

i would recommend seeing a reputable trichologist (the uk has an institute idk about the US but make sure they're legitimate) or failing that a dermatologist because there are about 50 causes of hair loss and treating for the wrong cause can be a waste of time money

if you then find out it's genetic hair loss my advice then would be 2% minoxidil and a lot of patience and perseverance

Its true that sometimes hair styling can have bad effects on the hair but it can not lead to permanent hair loss. So don't worry about that but its true regular styling is not good.
