Hello everyone,
I am a 28 yr old with hairloss that keeps getting worse. I guess my hair started falling out when I was about 14 or 15. It was nothing drastic, but I had started noticing more hairs in the shower when I was done and a few more in my hair brush. So, my mother had taken me to a dermatologist to see what he thought. The first thing he said was,"If you think you are losing more hair than normal, we should do a hair count for one week." So everyday for 7 days I would take all the hairs from the brush and the shower and put them in a baggie. I dropped them off to his office, and a day later he called me back in. He said that there was a considerable larger amount of hair then he would have hoped, so the next step was blood work. About a week later I went back and he told me the results seemed fine, so he just said it may be stress related, or it may be because I was on birth control a while back. He told me to try Rogaine (for men, they didnt have womens yet). I used it for a while, but it was useless and expensive. My hair was still falling out. It wasn't really that bad, so I let it go for a little while. Obviously that was a mistake, because as time passed, more and more people would tell me about the "bald" spot that seemed to be growing. Fortunately it was pretty easily hidden by the rest of my hair, I just had to watch how I wore it. I guess I was really in disbelief. As time passed and I graduated high school, it became worse. So did the level of stress in my life. My parents divorced after a long drawn out battle, I started college, I worked, and I wound up having a nervouse breakdown. I was put on anti depressants and anti anxiety meds, and one of the side effects was possible hairloss. So, after about a year of this, my boyfriend (now hubby) said that he thought my hair was really bad. So, back to the dermatologist I went. He did more blood work and said that if the results were normal, I should try getting injections in my scalp. Well, that was out of the question ( I have a zero tolerance for pain). He was all out of ideas. I went on vacation in May of 2002 to Florida(lived in NY at that time) and my boyfriend pruposed. I was so thrilled, but then when I went to my cousin's hair salon to tell him and became really sad. It occurred to me that I was going to be in a ton of photos and my hair was horrible. My cousin suggested Nioxin, and after 6 months, I couldnt afford it anymore. No great loss, it wasn't doing anything. Well, after the wedding (right after) I got pregnant. I was having twins and was very very sick. On top of the hairloss I had, my hair fell out from being sick. So here I am now, 28 and my hair is sooo thin, even little kids point it out. My hairdresser said to use Nioxin, so I have been, and it is not doing a thing

Hi Sandra, It's hard to find posts that are very recent. You never know if people are still suffering w/this nerve racking condition months later. Once it goes away you don't want to be reminded that you've been there.
My story started several years ago when my hair started shedding like crazy, I waited several weeks thinking it would stop, but it didn't. I was exactly 40 yrs. old. At that time I was not having any luck getting pregnant so went to a fertility dr. she started doing all kinds of blood work & discovered I had hypothyroidism. I didn't know what that was but found out a major symptom is hair loss. The meds i took did not decrease the hair loss til about more than a year later. Then for about one year my hair grew back in thicker, fuller & in the best condition than I had seen it for years. How we forget so easily the things we don't want to remember. This past May it started falling out again, the hair gets dry brittle, unmanageable. Weird it stopped falling out Sept & October but started back again in November w/a venegance. These last 3 wks has been the worst. Waking up in the morning the bed is full of hair, all over the apt. I find balls of it, all day long at work I pray no one sees me picking hair off my chair & desk. All my blood work (thyroid & some hormones) have come back normal. My doctor said just change your shampoo. What a *&(^*@! genius!!! So this time it's apparently not my thyroid acting up. Don't know what it is but i'm determined to seek out any medical, alternative, homeopathic solution I can find. I have an apt. w/ dr. for natural hormone therapy on Monday & a hair specialist Dr. this Tuesday. So my question to you is besides the Nioxin have you seen any Drs for bloodwork? It may be a thyroid condition. I've also read low iron levels may contribute to it. Let me know how you're coping. (cause I'm just freaking out) It's good to have a place like this to go so you feel you're not alone. :freaked: Best Wishes, Merle
