How much hair loss is normal in the shower?

I know some shedding is normal, but I’m losing what feels like a handful every time I wash my hair. Is that still within a healthy range, or should I be worried? Curious what’s “normal” for others.

There was a funny thread on this forum maybe 8yrs ago where the guy was shedding hundreds and hundreds of hairs daily and was convinced he’d be bald in a year. After 5+yrs of updates he still had a full head of hair lol.

I’ve read anywhere from 50-150 hairs per day is considered normal. People have different anagen length phases of the hair growth as well.

In order to figure out my baseline daily shed I bought a hair catcher for my shower drain and monitored the hair count to see what my daily average was. Also took note of miniaturized hairs. An increase in miniaturized hairs is a cause for concern. After a while you won’t need to do this every day of course. Keep in mind women with long hair seem to shed a lot but it’s often really not if you actually count them. The longer hair wraps and coils so it just seems like it’s a lot.
