If rogaine caused me to lose hair can I use nizoral?

I began using rogaine on my hairline before I acutally had a receeding hairline (long story) and it really messed it up. My dermatolgist says I have sebhoreic (sp?) dermatitis and told me to use nizoral. I have heard rogaine and nizoral work kind of similarly? Is that correct? If so I need to stay away.. Thanks for any input.

If i was you i would use just the Nizoral on its own and see how you get on without Rogaine as Rogaine might make the dermatitis worse.

i dont use rogaine and wont use it again because is messed up my hair.. i am not losing any hair and dont have a family history of hairloss.. i lost hair when i used rogaine on my hairline (again long story). this was a couple of years ago. therefore i was wondering if rogaine had a negative effect on me would nizoral also have a negative effect on me? i am only using nizoral for anti-dandruff purposes not for anti-dht purposes.

it does not make you lose your hair. You just didn't use it long enough/male pattern baldness was doing the damage faster than rogaine could grow new hair.

Hey chrism, those are two very different products used for two very different purposes.
minoxidil is used to stimulate hair growth and prolonging the hair growth cycle
nizoral is used to treat dandruff and keep your scalp healthy. There are some clams that nizoral can help with some minor regroth but it is not sold as a hair growth stiulator and I would say using them together is your best bet as minoxidil will help with growth and nizoral will keep your scalp healthy which is a key factor to keeping your hair.

I was only referring to minoxidil, not nizoral. Not that nizoral would cause any hairloss either.

You sure you addressed that post to the right person?

Frontal hairline is particularly exposed to inflammation hair loss caused by minoxidil so try a topical anti-inflammation product. Perhaps proxiphen or make your own like I did and its allowed me to use minoxidil without redness.

i think i am being misunderstood.. a few years ago (b4 I had any hair loss)i went over a month w/o washing my hair and applied gel on a daily basis. When I finally washed my hair, quite a bit fell out (although I didn't realize these were naturally shedding hairs). Being young and stupid I thought I was losing my hair so I freaked and started putting Rogaine on my hairline. Before Rogaine I had not lost any hair. After a month on Rogaine my hairline got totally messed up. Since stopping I have not lost any hair.

Now my question is since Rogaine did this to my hair, will Nizoral have a similar effect?

Correct, the gel collected your naturally shedding hairs and when you dialuted your gel & shed hair 'nest' (when finally washing) a months worth of normally shed hairs came out all at once.

Any hair that Rogaine 'encouraged' into the shed phase of the hair growth cycle will, in time, return. This is true of folk with male pattern baldness, and especially true in your case (not having male pattern baldness), it may be weeks or months.

No, Rogaine extends the anagen (growth) stage of the hair cycle, Nizorals active ingredient (ketoconazole) is an anti-fungal and mild anti-androgen.

They both work in very different ways.

I suggest using the Nizoral and prehaps T/Gel to bring your deramtitis under control.

I repeat this, after stopping the use of rogaine your hair will eventually return to a the state it would have been at if you had never used it.

And maybe wash your hair more than once a month. :hairy:

thanks for the reply hotlegs, it was very helpful

I also thought that the hair lost from rogaine would come back but it's been about 2 years now and it hasnt. My hair has stayed the same as far as I can tell. I know I have a severe case of dermatitis on my hairline, I get tons of crap under my fingernails even while washing my hair on a daily basis. When I used Rogaine I would literally have 1" thick chunks of dried Rogaine peel off my scalp.

I hope that if I can get rid of my dermatitis my hair will come back.. I've just been afraid to use Nizoral b/c I've heard (don't remember where) that they work similarly. I believe all my hair is there allthough where I applied rogaine, the hairs are a lot shorter and thinner. Can dermatitis really prevent hairs from groing to full length? I thought my hair had just become dependent on Rogaine or something, and therefore would not grow to full potential after stopping.. I don't know..

prehaps the dematitis is hindering growth ?

maybe you have the early stages of male pattern baldness ?

you need to get this under control.

"1" thick"? hhhmmm not so sure about this one, Your scalp is not 1" thick, unless bits of bone and brain were coming off.

It is not unusual for your scalp to react to initial use of rogain like this, mine did but the flaking stopped after a few weeks (and a few bottles of T/Gel + Nizoral)

Your choice, if you are more scared of the Nizoral than the dermatitis then don't use it, stick with the dermatitis.

I will say this one final time, Nizoral and minoxidil working entirely different ways, one is an anti-fungal shampoo with mild anti-androgen properties, one is a growth stimulator that extends the follicles anagen (growth stage).

What makes you believe your hair can become dependent of Rogaine ?

I have answered your questions, but it seems like you feel a need to dwell in uncertain scientifically vague waters.

Do some research.

Good Luck
