When did your hair loss start?

Although my user name* may seem to suggest that I am somehow sick, I don't have any real chronic health conditions. However, my grandfather had Type II diabetes beginning in his late thirties. His hair loss started around that time in his life. It may have been a coincidence, but I believe that at the very least his condition and/or medication he took exacerbated the loss he was experiencing. Prior to developing this condition, he had the thickest head of curly hair imaginable. Photos show that he lost it all very rapidly.

Many IAHRS doctors are adamant that genetics are the only truly significant cause of balding. Dr. Bernstein, whom I saw in December, completely dismissed my suggestion that my grandpa's health condition affected his baldness in any way. Nevertheless -- and even without the presence of peer-reviewed research on this subject -- I remain open to the possibility that there may be plenty of factors that cause or affect hair loss. Genetics have surely caused mine, but perhaps things would have been different hair-wise for my grandpa if he hadn't developed diabetes.

If you have diabetes, I really wish you the best in treating it. It is a terrible condition -- I know from firsthand experience as I can't forget how much my grandpa suffered in his later years.

*It's actually the name of an excellent song by the Smiths, in case you're wondering.

If you search the net, there are links of people with diabetes who experience hair loss. I'm going to get tested soon as I think I might have diabetes...

There seems to be a huge increase in people with diabetes, allergies and hair loss amongst younger people these days.... I wonder if they are all linked and increase hair loss in people with male pattern baldness gene....

Well diabetes can be reversed in a few days, so, if this were the cause for male pattern baldness in a person it could be treated very quickly..

Is this really true? There are people who have this disease so long their legs/feet need amputation or they loose their eyesight.

Hi im new to posting on this forum but i always look at it. Im balding and on the big three. What you are saying is completely untrue. People have diabetes for life, there is no cure.

My grandad has type 2 and my girlfriend type 1.
My grandad is not bald, i also have a friend with type 1 who has a full head of hair. In response to the op's question, when it comes to male pattern baldness dht is the contributing factor. In my experience well managed diabetes does not cause hair loss. I am not sure whether high or low sugar levels could cause hair loss.

Diabetes is either insulin resistance meaning your body cannot use the insulin it produces to reduce sugar- type 2
OR your body does not produce insulin to reduce your sugar- type 1

Type 1 is purely genetic
Type 2 could be from a number of things that effect your body, common in obese people and elderly people.

Doing a paper on BPH which is also caused by DHT to learn more about the hormone and hairloss. And some of the peer reviewed articles I looked at had long sections about the link between diabetes and BPH. Didn't read it all so I dont have an answer for you, but when I look at it again I can let you know and post some stuff. They had a picture showing the link and how diabetes increases Insulin Growth Factor and this affects the prostate. They had other factors too, but all I took from it is it ups DHT and other stuff to cause premature enlargement of prostate and lowers other hormones. If you have type 2 start taking care of yourself and you may be able to reverse it.

It's crazy how diabetes can affect so many aspects of health, including hair loss. I’ve been looking into treatments like Mounjaro for managing my diabetes. It's great that I can now get Mounjaro online, it’s definitely worth considering for better control. But I'm interested in updates on this topic.

Diabetes can indeed be associated with hair loss, as high blood sugar levels can affect blood circulation and damage hair follicles over time. Additionally, conditions like diabetic neuropathy and poor circulation in the scalp can contribute to hair thinning.
