Is it possible to be balding but not shed?

I've had quite a distinct widow's peak (Norwood 2 probably) from at least the age of 18, and now at 20 it is worrying me slightly, although I've noticed no thinning at all. In all likelihood I have receded slightly, but oddly enough I have noticed no shedding whatsoever - even when I'm rubbing conditioner into my hair I noticed 3-4 hairs at most, and I have never noticed hairs on my pillow in the morning.

I might be clutching at straws here, but I'm hoping this means I'm either not losing hair, or I'm losing it so slowly I should still have most of my hair when I hit 30. What do you think? Have any of you been balding yet never noticed shedding?

Yes, most balding occurs without shedding. Hairs fall out naturally and are replaced with smaller, progressively thinner hairs. Balding isn't just hairs falling back and not coming back. I didn't notice progressively more falling out, but it was due to the hairs becoming thinner and weaker, and thus easier to pull out/break. If you notice thinning or recession, then you need to go to a specialist and check it out.
