I've been trying to figure out the right forum for this post. If I got the wrong one can a moderator please move it.

A little about myself:

My name is Jared and I am a 21 year old male living in Auckland, New Zealand. I am studying a Bachelor of Commerce and Bachelor of Property at the University of Auckland. I have a lanky build, to get more built I have started to take protein shakes and train as a boxer twice a week and I also try to work out at the gym when I can (but that is aproximately never).

I started to notice my hair thinning around the temples when I was around 17/18 but didn't really care as I was young and it wasn't too noticeable. It has gradually worsened over time and I now want to do something about it.

See recent photos:
Front and top
This is me with gel in my hair to hide my receeding hair line as much as possible. It's actually about half an inch more than the photo suggests.
Crown
As you can see my hairline puts about 5 years on my appearance

I have visited a few hair clinics including Advanced Hair Studio. These hair clinics have all suggested a laser treatmeant, herbal propecia (Saw Palemto?) and shampoos.

Can someone that has had a similar situation (and successfully grew back hair) please give me some advice? I would like to have a normal hair line but have been told that is impossible.

Hair clinics are very expense but I have been given a good quote by Advanced Hair Studio. I am unsure as to whether the laser is needed or beneficial. Has anyone been to one of these and had good results? The before and after photos they show look amazing.

All of the hair clinics I have been to suggested Saw Palmeto even if I wasn't going to go though with their program. Is this a good idea? I have heard that p**rn stars take it because it increases sexual performance also. Sounds good to me, even if only to counter any side effects from taking Propecia.

Each hair clinic has had their own shampoos, I'm guessing these would all be the same and promote hair growth, thicken hair etc etc?

New Zealand has currently a massive crystal meth problem so I don't think I would be able to import any pills.

I have read a few stories that recommend a few things to stop hair loss but is there anything that actually grows back hair to a normal hair line. Any suggestions and comments are welcome but please use lamens terms because I don't know all your acronyms and chemical names.

I have just read a few more threads on man breasts. Can you please note any side effects that have/could happen also please.

My advice is that you stay away from ALL hair clinics, they are all scammers. All you need is propecia or prosca (cut in in 1/4) and take on daily. You could also use minoxidil (which is what advance hair offers), but you can get it off the net for cheap. Also the best shampoo to use is nizoral (it comes in both 1% and 2%) Any will do the job.

STAY away from saw palmatto, it doesnt worry for hair loss.
Laser treatment doesnt give you the results the hair studios show you, if you want to use laser buy the laser comb, i would suggest you wouldnt need it at this stage.

Best thing start on propecia, if your willing to apply minoxidil 1-2 times daily then go for it, and definately use the nizoral

goodluck and keep us updated

Ok so I'm guessing I need a prescription for Prosca, is that the correct name to say to my doctor? Is it availabe at Pharmacies or is it only available from online stores? Are there any that send to New Zealand? I will probably have to contact customs to see if I can even import it.

What is minoxidil and is that also the correct name to ask for? Do I need a prescription? From what I have read it's a liquid that you put on the balding areas? How do you apply it and how much is required and how often? Should I also apply it to the centre of my hair because it currently looks like a racing stripe of thinness.

Is nizoral the name of the shampoo or the active chemical in it? If it's just a chemical name what is the best brand for the best price? What is the difference between 1% and 2%? (obviously I want the best for growing back hair). I shower every morning and normally shampoo my hair with Garnier Fructis Fine hair Everyday shampoo. Do I replace this with the nizoral and shampoo everyday? I have read some people say they only use nizoral every second day. If I use it every second day should I shampoo with another one in the other days?

Can you please explain briefly what the minoxidil and nizoral actually do?

And could you also give me links to sites which would send all of these internationally if they are not supplied at local Pharmacies.

minoxidil 1x (night)
spironolactone 5% on hair line (night)

What are these two and why have you not suggested them for me?

Thanks!

Also I have read people talking about hair transplant and making it seem like the wonder cure. Does it just stand for Hair Transplant or is it a new drug/treatment?

Yes you will need a prescription. and that is the name to tell to your doctor. You can get it online (jusat serach for proscar at google.com)

What is minoxidil and is that also the correct name to ask for? Do I need a prescription? From what I have read it's a liquid that you put on the balding areas? Yes minoxidil is a liquied which you apply 2x a day. And yes you apply it on the balding areas. You apply 1ml twice a day to balding areas. And then you gently massage in into scalp not hair. And yes you should apply it to centr of your hair loss... You do not need a presciption you could just buy it from your local pharmacy, or online which will be much cheaper.

Nizoral is the name of the shampoo, so look for the name nizoral. There is not a big difference in 1 and 2 %. So just use the 1%.... Use nizoral every 3rd day. Mon- nizoral, tues-garnier wed- (day of shamoo, this is up to you) thurs nizoral and so forth....

Can you please explain briefly what the minoxidil and nizoral actually do?

Please read up on products, all is explained in this site.
Minozidil is a growth stimulant... Nizoral will keep scalp healthy...

And could you also give me links to sites which would send all of these internationally if they are not supplied at local Pharmacies.

I get my products from http://www.wholesalehairproducts.com/
or just search the products on google...

Dont worry about hair transplant just yet..
goodluck

Thanks for your help. I'm going to set up an appointment with a Dermatologist asap and then sort out all these chemicals!

I think this is the 'big three' that everyone is talking about and seems to be the norm. But does anyone else have any opinions? Should I do anything else? Change my diet, exercise more/less, use special gel etc

Hey,
I am still waiting to see a Dermatologist (long waiting lists - 29th August) to get my prescription for Prosca but I have started using Nizoral.

My mum bought it for me from the supermarket and I'm not sure if it's the right one. It is a blue box and on the front says "Nizoral 1% Anti-Dandruff Treatment". It has "with deep conditioning" also and in small writing it has "ketoconazole 10mg/g". On the back it has instructions and also says "Contains 0.05% w/w quaternium-15".

Just want to know if this is the right one that I should be using as it is not the same one as on the Whole Hair Products site. Is there a non dandruff one and should I be using the 2% instead of the 1%?

Re: Minoxidil. These are my local online options. What do these prices seem like to you guys (please change the currency with the drop down menu)? I don't feel very comfortable ordering from a site like Whole Hair Products, it just doesn't look very professional.

Re: Finasteride. These are the prices that I can get for Propecia and Proscar. Again please change the currency. Are these prices competitive or should I keep looking? I have looked at a few New Zealand online pharmacies and they seem to be similar.

Thanks.

sorry for the very late response. you posted in my "tell your story" post that we have similar hair problems. however, i cant seem to access your pictures. all i can say is for you to just give finasteride + minoxidil a try. i dont bother with the shampoos because my scalp got used to the minoxidil so i dont get itchiness or dandruff any more. diet and exercise from what i understand do not help reverse balding. what i do know for sure is that diet and exercise can help you in building a good physique. if you have that, most ladies wont care that you are going bald.
