Just started propecia, start rogaine too?

Hi guys,

Just to give you a little background. I'm 20 years old and first noticed my hairloss about a year and half ago when my hairline started to recede. Struck down early unfortunately!

For me it feels like my hairloss has been pretty rapid:

I guess my hairline started to recede before I took notice (January 2010), I first noticed the crown in December 2010.

Kicking myself for not doing anything sooner but I did a year abroad and didn't have access to treatments.

So last week I started propecia and my question is should I start rogaine too, I had originally planned to wait but waiting 6 months could result in unnecessary loss so I'm not sure what to do. Rogaine just seems like a pain though, but the hairloss clinic I was speaking to said propecia is unlikely to result in any regrowth in the hairline and it may not slow down or halt the recision. It's a twice a day application, I was told it's fairly easy to apply (the foam at least?) 'dries in 2 mins'

So I guess my question is, should I wait propecia out and keep following the results for say 4-6 months before trying rogaine or just bite the bullet and get on it now?

Many people start "The Big 3" at the same time. Personally, I'd wait for about 6 months or so and see what your Propecia results are. Reason being that how will you know if the propecia's working if you start multiple treatments at once? My personal opinion is that it's best to know what's working before you add anything else.

I made the mistake of starting dutasteride/15% minoxidil/spironolactone Cream all at the same time about 2 months ago to try and get some more of my hairline back. Sadly, it shed pretty quickly....and I didn't know what it was that was causing it, so I had to stop all 3 and then start introducing them one at a time.

Drop the Saw, get on finasteride. Saw is basically a sugar pill when it comes to male pattern baldness.

Can anyone tell me about the quality of hair regrown with minoxidil, is it the same?

After applying foam rogaine, does it just dry in and leave your hair as it naturally would be or is it like applying some kind of wax/mousse to it?

I saw the pics you posted and seems like you are losing more hair at the temple(receding) and less at the crown. From personal experience and from what I've read, minoxidil works better on the crown. I've tried rogaine foam before and personally I think its comparable to other brands. The only good thing is that it doesn't drip like other liquid minoxidil. You still need to gently rub the foam onto the thinning areas. As for the regime you mentioned, I would probably start in a reverse order. Start of with minoxidil for 3-6 months, evaluate then see whether you need to start propecia. But since you alr started, it's probably worth waiting for a while before you start minoxidil.

Just like DoubleL.14 said, I would start minoxidil first and using it 6-9 months to see the result first, before considering finasteride. minoxidil may be a less harmful to health among the two, my 2 cents!

You mention that rogaine is more effective in the crown, like you say I have more thinning at the front,recession at the temples. Is it going to be effective there?
