Yes, i know. stupid as hell. i really wish i could turn back time.

story is, i thought i was losing hair, so i used this anti-dandruff shampoo from nioxin. it says it stops DHT inhibition. so i thought, why not leave it on for a day so that i get around the clock protection. i knew nothing about hairloss. man, if i was back in that day, i would know that i had next to none hairloss. i had this thick bush of hair.

anyway, i know i deserve to die for being so intensely stupid and vain. but its been 2.5 years since then. my hairloss has been intensely fast. from the thickest hair to having my scalp being seen now.

i'm really depressed and it just gets harder and harder each day going to work, so please, i would appreciate serious ppl who could help me.

ok, i'm "suspecting" i don't have male pattern baldness. hear me out first:

1. no one in my family has it. mom and dad's side.
2. i have diffuse hairloss very evenly spread. recesson since 2.5 years ago is 1 to 2 mm (i have this small mole right on my hair line as an indication).
3. the hair that falls on my sink or shower: 80% are thick hair, 20% are thin hair in which i suspect are from my temples (yes i do know i have some male pattern baldness due to miniturization on the temples, but then i'm losing hair intensely fast. with this speed of hairloss, the ratio should be closer to 40/60, instead of 80/20). looking in the mirror, the diameter of all my hair except my temples are all thick. the problem is just the density of my hair has gone extremely low.
4. Right after the day i left the shampoo on for 24 hours, my scalp itched like mad. my scalp was INTENSELY oily. the dandruff was TRUELY insane. i swear, if i scratched my head for a good couple minutes, i could cover a 1 inch by 1inch surface area completely with dandruff. either this 24 hour shampoo leave-on caused me to lose my hair OR it triggered my hairloss to accelerate from snail pace to fast pace.

my current situation now (after 2.5 years) is this: i have since decided to not use shampoo. sounds real crazy, but it has now cured my itching to next to none. dandruff next to none unless i use my finger nails to scratch some out. oiliness is alot less but there's still some as i have alot less hair to distribute this oil. i am still losing hair, although not at the crazy pace i had initially, but still its not stoping.

OK, my question is this: could this be male pattern baldness? i have thick diametered hair but extremely low density. i've seen this on a few people so I know it happens.

also, is there a chance the shampoo caused such harshness that it caused permernant shutdown and scarring of my follicles? it almost seems that way with the low desnity. it seems like i only have a sprouted hair spaced after 4 other former hair follicles. did those 4 hair follicles just die? and most important, will they ever grow back? i have the impression that once they shut down, they're gone.

any help would be appreciated.

That wasn't very helpful, thinning

First thing I would do is contact Nioxin and tell them exactly which product you left on your skin. They will be able to know what ingredients are in the product and hopefully give you some advice as to dealing with its effects. They have to by law research everything they put into their stuff and determine its effect on people, so they are a good place to start. Once you have identified through them which ingredient is probably responsible, see a dermatologist to examine your scalp skin and determine if you damaged it or not. You may need to go to 2 or 3 just to get a solid concensus. If no damage is found by any of them, it is probably reasonable to assume male pattern baldness ... but things are rarely that cut and dry. Wish there was a diagnostic test for hair loss!

thanks for the help. appreciate it.

but wouldn't nioxin argue back that they did not intend anyone to leave the shampoo on their hair fo a whole day?

i'm going to feel might stupid to tell them that i did that.

its hard for me to get a scalp biopsy. my insurance doesn't cover cosmetic illnesses. i don't earn too much and it would be hard for me to pay for the consultation fees. but i do appreciate the help.

my scalp was initially red, itching and oily. now it looks normal except the scalp looks shiny on a bright light bulb. i see alot of bald people with that shine. does that immediately mean i'm in the male pattern baldness group?
