I have been on finasteride for 1 year and 5 months and the only real problem I have had is heavy shedding almost the whole time. Is this normal? Did anyone else go through anything similar? Did it ever stop?

i've been on finasteride for about 21 months now, and have had few shedding issues. However, i have had little results. so if your getting results and shedding i wouldnt worry about it.

Please post topics in the correct locations. This thread belongs in the Propecia forum.

If you have had "massive shedding" for a year and a half, wouldn't you be bald by now?

If possible, please post some photos from before propecia and from current so we can evaluate the change in hair density you've experienced during your time on Propecia.

Hi gourmetstylewellness.com I will get some pics posted ASAP. I had a lot more hair the then average person and all the shedding is starting to leave me with scattered thinning areas over the top of my head. So I was wondering if this is normal I have read it can take up to 2 years for finasteride to start showing results.

Impossible to have so many more follicles than the average person that "shedding" would do you in.

Shedding not being male pattern baldness, and all.

Is it possible to have finasteride be effective, experience sides, but NOT shed because you've been on minoxidil for a while? Shed less? I assume no.

Is there anyone here who has started finasteride after being on minoxidil for a while (couple years)? Did you stop the minoxidil after the finasteride started working? I think I will.[/i]

major mistake.

Minoxidil's mechanism of promoting hair growth is completely different from the growth following some months on finasteride. Minoxidil, being merely a growth stimulant, can "force" damaged follicles into anagen phase and keep them active. The follicles that kept producing hair shaft during 2 years on minoxidil for instance, are not guaranteed to recover when the dht levels are lowered by finasteride. You WILL lose ground.

Thanks for the input.
How about switching from 5% to 2%? Every other day?

Why would you want to do that? The only apparent reason is that you could prolong the effectiveness of your treatment by holding minoxidil 5% for later. But you have started already so do not quit 5%. You will probably have less hair as the offset of growth by minoxidil is dose dependent.

Don't tell me about the fuss of application. You are here now researching on your loss. So 60 secs is nothing when you are out for optimal results.

You could try to experiment regarding the minimal concentration and routine able to let you maintain- but this is not a game. It is about the image of your hair. Do not change routines- be consistent.
