Hey guys...I'm new to the forum, but I 've been a member of another one for a couple of months...here's my story.

I'm about 18 and a half years old. I started noticing that my hair was falling out towards the end of my junior year of high school (I was 17 at that point), but thought nothing of it. I would be practicing for my SATS, run my hand through my head and I would notice some hair falling out in the book I was working in. At the time, I was using Accutane (acne medication) and a TON of hair wax (pomade) to style my hair. So anyway, I went away to be a counselor for 2 months that summer and completely forgot about my hair falling out. So when I came back from the camp I was working at, my soccer preseason training started and senior year was a few weeks away. So halfway into the soccer season and about a month into senior year, I started noticing a lot of hair coming out, and quite frequently. At this time, though, I didn't know it was normal for 50-100 hairs a day to fall out because I had previously never seen my hair shed as much as it was. So I tried to talk to my parents about my hair falling out and they said "You're crazy, your hair is fine....its not falling out!" It took me about 2 months to successfuly convince them that it was. Finally, my mom took me to a dermatologist who said I had male pattern baldness. She recommended Rogaine at that point because I was only 17 and she didn't want me using Propecia until I was 18. I bought Rogaine, but never uesd it because I didn't really want to go through the process of putting it on. So my mom and did a little research, and we found some herbal sh*t online called Proercin, or something like that. I bought it, used it for close to three months and noticed that my hair was falling out faster, so I stopped. Went back to the derm around my 18th birthday, which was in the beginning of May 2004 and she prescribed Propecia. I was very optimistic about using the Propecia and thought it would help me out a lot. It's been 7 months and let me tell you....my hair has been shedding since I started using it. At no point has my hair loss slowed down or have I regrown any hair. My hair seems to be falling out all over the top of my head, mostly in the front and hair line. My friends still don't notice it, but I can pretty much count the hairs in the front of my head now. I went to another dermatologist a few months back who said I had seberroheic dermatitis gave me Nizoral 2% to use.....So after 4 months of Propecia + Nizoral 2%, my hair is still falling out just as rapidly as ever and I AM GETTING DEPRESSED.

A little more on my story.....my dad, who is in his 50's, still has a full head of hair. His dad, who is in his late 70's still has most of his hair as well. My mom's dad did go bald, but not until he was much older (he's in his late 80's). My hair loss is accompanied by a considerable itch and lots and lots of dandruff (the Nizroal hasn't worked that well to stop it).

For some reason, I really don't think my hair loss is male pattern baldness. Could it be the dermatitis causing my hair loss? What can I do that will actually work. I am getting so damn depressed its not even funny.

Have you noticed a progression of loss, or just alot of shedding? It could be that you are shifting into your adult state and the shedding will stop. I'm sorry you're getting depressed, I wish to God that none of us would have to deal with this.

I am definitely losing the hair....it's not just shedding. My hair used to be so thick that you couldn't see my scalp even when it was wet. Now you can see right through my hair to my scalp. The front hair line is receding slowly, but is getting faster now.

It isn't uncommon to go through a shed in your later teenage years. My hair thickness changed dramatically when I was 19. About a year later after my hair diffused a bit it stayed basically where it was for about four-five years. It is pretty easy to see if you are suffering from male pattern baldness or something else. If your hairline seems to be receding in the pattern of the Norwood scales you've somehow picked up male pattern baldness somewhere along the line. Try seeing another Dermatologist in your area to get a second opinion if you think something else is affecting your hair.

My hair doesn't look like its following the Norwood scale....it's thinning everywhere, just more heavily in the front. And the hair line has moved back a little bit, but not all that much. Also, my hair loss has been accompanied by a foul smell to my hair. I know that sounds weird, but does anyone know anything about hair loss and smelly hair/scalp syndrome?

EliasNJ....i'm guessing you're from NJ. I am from NJ also, North/Central area. If you are, can you recommend any good Derms in that area?

Well, I worked as a sleepaway camp counselor this past summer for 8 weeks and we had a dermatologist come up every other week. Although he didn't examine me in an appropriate office with special equipment, he said it looked like I had a case of seberroheic dermatitis. At the time my scalp was extremely red and itchy, so he gave me Nizoral 2% and Olux Foam. He said my hair loss was probably due to that. Well, I've been using Nizoral for close to 4 months now and my hair is still falling out, so I don't think he was right about that being the cause of my hair loss.

Anyone know anything about smelly hair/scalp. Since losing my hair, my head has started to stink, even though I was it daily.

Do you use any products on your hair, like leave in conditioner?

no.....before I started losing hair, I used to use Herbal Essence shampoo. To style my hair, I would load on hair wax (pomade) because gel didn't hold my hair too well. When I started losing hair and getting dandruff, I switched to Head and Shoulders. Now, I used Nizoral 2% every other day and Paul Mitchell Tea Tree stuff I got at a hair salon on the other days. When I first started thinning, I was able to use hair gel and it looked pretty good for a while. For the past few years, I've had the flip in the front hair style. Now since my hair has gotten REALLY thin, my hair flips up in the front WITHOUT any hair products. I don't get it....
