I just joined the forum.

I'm 24, have been losing hair since I was probably 18. Never wanted to deal with the problem until now.

I am only losing hair in the front. My hairline is pretty far back (I'll post pictures if anyone is interested).

I've wondered before if I have a thyroid problem. I'm very thin (120lbs, 5'10"), eat regularly, have a ridiculous metabolism, and have been losing hair. Does anyone have any thoughts? I'm currently self-employed and have the worst medical plan known to man, so I haven't seen a doctor yet.

I just ordered finasteride and nizoral shampoo, and will start on that as soon as I get it.

Thanks in advance!

Welcome!

It's good that you're getting on Finasteride and Nizoral shampoo! You're almost guaranteeing yourself some results.

If you think you have a thyoid problem, then you should definitely go get some bloodwork done. A thyroid condition is pretty serious and should be treated so.

Propecia might let you maintain your hairline, along with the Nizoral shampoo. It should work out fine, man!

Goodluck,
Andy

Not bad!

Looks like Propecia and Nizoral should do the trick. Maybe Minoxidil down the line if you HAVE to.

I've heard both opinions on this. One side says use minoxidil as a "last resort" because it's a pain to use, and you'll be using it for the rest of your life. The other side says to use the big 3. I don't really know what to do! I might try it though, because I only have frontal loss, which I'm not sure finasteride will be good at fixing.

As for minoxidil - should I go to a drug store and buy Rogaine, or is there a generic version I can buy somewhere?

Thanks again!

I wish I was wrong but I don't think that propecia alone will grow you that much hair.
Maybe when combined with minoxidil.
minoxidil is effective only for 48 months ,it is said so on the prospect of Regain.
I have used minoxidil for 5 years, on the 3rd year I saw a drastic decrease at the effectiveness.

re:

That time table on minoxidil effectiveness is simply a guess by oasis as the actions of minoxidil vary from person to person and its science is basically a mystery, which sucks. That being said, people indicate that it helps regrow hair and hte FDA has approved its use as safe.
I would recommend minoxidil use now only because you male pattern baldness has progressed to the point where another year of no growth stimulator is time you cannot lose. It absolutely sucks that, assuming you get results, that you do not know if its the finasteride, minoxidil or both that is helping.
Remember, male pattern baldness is progressive, so the earlier you treat it the better. Also rememeber that all treatments take time, have no gaurantee that they will work and there is an entire spectrum of results. Most get some sort of benefit from finasteride and minoxidil use, but those benefit typically take time to show themselves. In my opinion, if you start the big 3, there is no reason why you cannot at a minimum maintain what you have for a few extra years, which I consider to be a vey positive result. Of course there is a small potential that you either have no positive benefits or get a ton of regrowth.
5'10" 120 seems to be way too thin, but my 1st grade teacher taught me that humans can come in every size, shape or color so it could be normal. I suggest that you get blood work done to determine if there are underlying medical issues before starting a regime to fight male pattern baldness.
BTW, 5'10" 120 lbs. heh, are you mick's long lost brother.
