Seeking your thoughts:

I have been taking propecia 1mg for a while now. Just recently I added Minoxidel 5% liquid spray in my regimen. However, I felt that i have itchy scalp.

What should I do?

a. Stop using minoxidil?
b. Reduce dosage from 5% to 2.5% ml?
c. Is it normal for the initial usage of minoxidil & it will be gone after few days?
d. Use a little of nizoral?
c. Or I should stop if there is continuous irritation/itchiness

Appreciate your help & professional advise from MD.

Re: Minoxidel 5% ml irritation??

You may be sensitive to the propylene glycol in the topical minoxidil. It's a fairly common sensitivity or allergy that people can have. You may be able to find versions of topical minoxidil which use other things besides propylene glycol (like glycerin), but it may not be easy. You _may_ just have to stop using it altogether, if that turns out to be your problem.

That reminds me to pick-up a carton of milk 2% when I go to the store later! :)

Foam is the way to go. I use the liquid at night a couple of times a week and it doesn't really irritate me, but if I use it twice a day my scalp will be an itchy, dry mess.

I am the same way, it is the propylene glycol in the minoxidil solution that is giving me an itchy scalp. It also gets really flakey. Foam is fine, but I only have a single can left.

On my next minoxidil order, I am going to get what Cassin recommended above. It should help me out.

Unfortunately, Rogaine doesn't ship outside the USA. I am from Asia. Any suggestion where I can buy it on-line from a reputable seller?

I had that irritation as well but it stopped after I started using virgin coconut oil. Basically I use 2ml kirkland brand minoxidil all over my scalp at night then wait for couple of hours then I rub virgin coconut oil onto my scalp & hair line. I wash it off in the morning and the coconut oil makes a great pre-shampoo conditioner too. On alternate days I use rogaine foam.

I think you're not getting irritation cause you're skipping a day and using rogaine foam, not the coconut oil.

The rogain foam addition is recent infact last week after taking a few months break from it. With kirkland brand minoxidil I had bad irritation, severe flaking and at one stage had to use liquid betamethasone(steroid) for three days to stop the irritation/itching/flaking. Then I started putting aloe vera gel onto my scalp after 2hr application of kirkland minoxidil it did help but not as much as putting oils. Olive oil works OK but for me virgin coconut oil does the thing. No itching & no flakes with the cheap minoxidil anymore.

I too get slight irration and itchy scalp with kirkland 5% liquid...

I am continuing to use it even after 3 months and just baring with it only since it has given me more improvement in my hair line and hair then rogain foam did in 3 years use !

Is it important to stop using it right away though if one gets itchy ?

Well....you can still get minor itches no matter what you use. I do.

I would for sure move on from Kirkland to a less harsh brand.

Rogain foam
Minoxidil solutions fast dry

look into tea tree oil conditioner/shampoo

maybe use a lot once a day instead of two applications a day

So...depending on severity you have room to play around and figure out whats best FOR YOU.

thx good to hear, I can bear with it its only now and then itchy.

Welcome. You would do well with still using a nice hydrating gentle shampoo here and there. Really looking into tea tree shampoos. They are dirt cheap and really do well for any sort of irritation.

I have read virgin coconut oil is good for hair thickening before.

Well that link doesn't do much for me. It only talks about hair growth more than hair loss. But I did read some where else, that virgin coconut oil is good for thicker hair.
