Quick question, im sure its been asked before but im sorry couldnt find it on the search.

Does minoxidil make you non balding, thinning hairs dependant on it? I mean if I stop using it will the good hairs fall out?

On balding blog it says that only the hairs you grow with minoxidil are dependant, I want some other opinions.

Thanks.

It feels as if your hair becomes minoxidil dependent because it actually helps your 'healthy' hair (or hair that has yet to seem affected by male pattern baldness) stay in there longer. But the reality is that the hair grown by minoxidil - and the hair that you would have lost otherwise if not on the drug - disappears if you discontinue its use. As you can see, it is an illusion since the balding process continues and the hair you lose once you discontinue the product takes you back to where you would be if you have never used the drug in the first place.

People on hairloss sites like this one have an annoying habit of using the term "minoxidil dependent" without specifiying exactly what they mean by that. Although I haven't actually seen any studies to verify it, I would generally expect just about ALL hairs, even non-balding ones, to have their growth stimulated by minoxidil. Therefore, a thin, fine hair would probably become thicker under the influence of minoxidil. If you withdraw the minoxidil later, I would expect it to go back to being as thin and fine as it was before.

If the minoxidil stimulates the growth of what appears to be a BRAND-NEW hair, then yes, I would expect that hair to disappear if you discontinue the minoxidil. See what I'm saying? If you discontinue minoxidil in the future, I would expect things to go back to the way they WOULD have been, had you never used it at all.
