minoxidil question....how to apply...im a diffuse thinner.

My hair is thinning all over my head. I was wondering if it is bad to get some of the minoxidil on my hair? I'm using the regular applicator. My hair is shedding like crazy, I just got the minoxidil today though. What does having white root tips mean???? Plz help
