CALIFORNIA
Key Ballot Measures Go Governor's Way
By Jordan Rau, Times Staff Writer

Wagering that embryonic stem cells could provide cures for the most disabling ailments, Californians on Tuesday voted to create a $3-billion research effort that would be the nation's most aggressive.

Underwriting 10 years of scientific study, Proposition 71 - placed on the ballot by venture capitalists, Hollywood stars and rich people with sick relatives - will swell the financial obligations of what is already the most indebted state in America.

"All of us could have lived a hundred lifetimes and not had the opportunity to change the future of human suffering as the people of California have tonight," said Bob Klein, a Fresno real estate developer who helped finance the campaign for the bond measure.

They were running an ad with MJFox constantly about this proposition, here in california. Before I knew anything about it, I simply said "Im going to vote yes on this one, i dont even care what it says" because the ad was so motivating.

Naturally I read up on it beforehand, but the ads were very persuasive.

Let's hope something comes of it all.

From what I understand, stem cell research could yield promising results regardless of whether embryonic stem cells are available for research. Embryonic stem cells are capable of unlimited differentiation -- that is, they can generate any type of specialized cell. But adult stem cells can still differentiate, just along a restricted number of lineages.

In short, stem cell research = good.

Manu Chao is good, too.

This is alot of money being passed by california for stem cell research, this is much more then kerry proposed if he was elected, but kerry would have added on to this and it would have been at other research institutes around the country, instead of just california.
But mad props to california for proposing this and getting it passed, this will be a huge boon for californias research insitutes and for researchers around the country will becoming to california.
Also congrats for california for passing the the stricter mileage limits on vehicles a month back or so, i think it was mileage.

This is going to set an example for the rest of the country. Californians made the right decision and we will benefit greatly from it.

This is awesome!
