I began losing my hair about 5 years ago. I believe it initially started as a result of a thyroid problem, coupled with some incredible stress. I have tried to reduce the stress and the thyroid problem was corrected. The thinning slowed down, but is still happening. My hair is so thin, I am afraid to touch it, dye it, curl it or anything. I don't go to a hairstylist anymore because no matter how many times or how I tell them my hair is falling out, they still pull and comb so hard, it takes out even more hair. Therefore, my hair looks bad most of the time and is a yucky shade of blonde/brown. I'd love to highlight it, but am afraid it will all fall out. I don't know if hair dyes can do that to your hair or not? Does anyone know out there? I used to have so much hair. This is really depressing and I don't really care how I look anymore - clothes, hair or makeup. I am only in my early 40's and have so much ahead of me, but I can't get past the hair problem. I am using rogaine, but wonder if I should be taking something in addition or using another product. I really wish bald was "in" for women. It would make things a lot easier.

I have been diagnosed with hypothyroidism since I was fifteen (More than 30 years ago) and I have read that alopecia is common for people who suffer from a thyroid disease. Unfortunately, I suffered complete hair loss about three years ago - it went fast - first a bald spot then within three months it was gone. I have been wearing synthetic wigs but they are very hot (esp. in the summer) and very itchy if you have a sensitive scalp. I wish you lots of luck and know that you are not alone.

I only feel comfortable when I am home and can take my wig off. I wish bald was in for women as well.
