New here. Im 33 and not bald yet but my hair texture has changed some in the last 5 years and doesnt have the bounce it used to have on top so Im assuming it is the start of male pattern baldness.(my identical twin brother has experienced the same thing) I have read many posts here (surprised by all the negativity about propecia  ) but have decided (as has my brother) that we will give it a try.(generic of course  ) We have both been using it for a few days (my brother ahead of me by two days) and have noticed no side effects. Will keep people posted. I also promise I wont scare anyone with horror stories like the ones I have read about here. If I have something good or bad to report I will fo it with positiveness rather than negativeness.

99% of the horror stories you read here account for only .000000001% of the people that use the stuff and do NOT experience "horrible side effects". A slight lowering of libido (although not necessarily a negative effect if you're overly horny like me) can probably be expected, as well as oily skin and maybe an ache in yer balls in the preliminary stages of treatment. Used in conjunction with a good scalp shampoo, and minoxidil if the thinning is bad, you stand a good chance of at least saving what you got right now.

Best of luck and don't be scared by the weenies that shun themselves at the word "propecia"... they just have small penises ;)

Stingray, thank you for helping me once again point out the obvious.

People, please... think.

The only data you should be listening to is clinical data from controlled studies.

You can read them yourself here:

Das: Good decision with the generic, mate. Propecia is a bloody rip-off. My derm wanted to charge me 40 bucks a month for that stuff. I said no way, I'll just cut up some Proscar or get the generic.

Stingray: I can't believe all the negativity on this site. Why is everyone here so fraggin paranoid that they feel the need to rag on the people who decide not to take finasteride? Is there some sort of cult going on here? Do you guys worship the Almighty Propecia tablet and denounce non-propecia users as the Great and Terrible Anti-Christ? Or does everyone here just work for Merck? Are you guys getting kick-backs or something? How can I get in on this action?

I can't help but laugh everytime I read one of these comments, they're hilarious to me. As for people shunning Propecia having small weenies, I think you have it the wrong way around mate! (Er...joke...sort of :) ).

GourmetStyleWellness: That's good stuff posting the clinical studies. But I respect the stories of the people on here just as much as I respect the clinical data. Remember, that whenever a drug is put on the market, there are bound to be reactions to the drug that didn't show up in the clinical trials. This happens with EVERY drug. So don't look at the clinical trials as gospel truth.

Cheers to everyone!

The strength is in numbers.. not in the select few who unfortunately had a negative experience. The truth is that the VAST majority of those taking finasteride do so without a hitch.

Go ahead, ask the other bazillion people taking the drug... they'll tell you the same. I feel for those that experience problems with it..but I won't stop eating my cake because you are allergic to it.... and I wouldn't try to stop you from doing the same.

Life without risks is a dull one indeed.

I agree with everything you said mate. I just don't like the attitude of some of the people I've come across here. If you want to take Propecia and encourage others to do the same, excellent. But as a new poster, I appreciate hearing both sides of the story. And I respect those who choose not to take Propecia.

One key word lads: RESPECT. We all need to learn and respect one another. Just like that Rodney King bloke said, "Can't we all just (dramatic emotional pause) get along?" And Martin Luther King: "I have a DREAM. That one day people who take Propecia and the people who do not will come together as one." No wonder that bloke has his own holiday.

Cheers.

As many of us have pointed out, propecia is a drug that can help regrow and retain hair for some but not all users. It has certain side effects for some people, that have been well documented in double blind studies.

The point here is that those studies are more credible than the subjective and unverifiable postings on a web site. Not to imply that these posters mean nothing, simply that they are not as credible in any way, shape or form as the clinical trials.

I am not pushing propecia, simply indicating that it is not the mother of all evils like many posters seem to feel. Nor will it fix your life if that isn't working either. It will simply help you grow or retain hair AND it works better with minoxidil.

Try it or not. I am fine about it either way and I don't work for Merck anymore so I have no money on the line.

Iv posted about the negativity on this site when I first started, but there is not much you can do anyway.

Just read up, ask as many questions as you can (There will be good and bad replys, but f*** them, just do your research)

I decided to take Proscar, not because id rather be using something that is backed up by the FDA with clinical data, this company did spend millions on getting FDA approval.

I know there are loads of other products out there, but I feel like I will never have no way of knowing if they work properly.. I dont know about you but I feel this way about trying other products apart from minoxidil and Propecia:

The time you take taking these products, in that time you wont know if your hair will stop shedding, improve or just continue shedding. If it continues shedding, then you've lost that time and hair and it will take longer and it will be harder to get that hair back.

I have probably spent far too long in the denial stage, as you can see from my pictures so I thought why dont I just give my hair the best thats out there? And the best that IS out there at this very moment is Propecia, im not advertising, im just saying it is the only pill a company has spent millions on trying to prove that it CAN work and that is good enough for me because it has been PROVEN to work.

I hope I did not blab on or anything, but I will give updates on how things go on Proscar for me, just so others can get another view.

I also do believe though, when your taking something you should ALWAYS think positive, because if you think negative your more likely to BELIEVE your having side effects when your not.

Take care guys.
