One year into treatment - my findings

Well guys I've reached the one year marker in this journey towards a better head of hair and want to share my findings with you.

My starting point was about NW3 with major frontal hairline thinning and slight overall recession of this area as well as heavy recession at the

temples and mild thinning of the crown. I'd been losing hair since age 19 and began treatment at 25.

I started on brand name rogaine liquid. My head was shaved to a number 0 on the clippers every day so applying minoxidil was easy and I found it

hard to imagine why everyone complained about it so much. I later learned what the fuss was about!.

I experienced no sides but don't think I noticed any progress after 8 weeks so decided to get on a dht blocker. I learned that 8 weeks was too

sonn to tell if the minoxidil was working but in this time I also learned that minoxidil alone was not going to keep my hair for very long. I decided to go

straight for the apparant most effective dht blocker dutasteride.

At around the 4 month point I started to feel little prickly stubbly hairs at the front of my hairline which had not been there for at least a year,

although the smooth hairless patch behind still remained. It was around this time I added Nizorelle to the mix as my scalp was having trouble with

the minoxidil and became flakey. The growth I was getting was a good sign. After about another 2 months the smooth area began to have some

stubble also, but not quite as thick as the small handful of hairs at the very front. I also noticed a little of the same happening on my left temple but

nothing on my right.

I was excited about the results I was getting so far and continued treatment.

At month 7 I skipped shaving for a couple of days and saw my hairline was looking quite ok, especially at the front. The temples wer still pretty

poor looking, although the left one had come down about 1/4 inch and there were plenty of new fine hairs here now. Still the right one remained

unchanged.

At the end of month 7 it was Christmas and New Years and as I had 2 weeks off work and away from my family and friend due to going away

with my girlfriend for the holidays I decided to grow my hair out and see if my progress was enough to have a normal hair style and not look too

bad.

After 2 weeks I had hair :) And it was better than it was the last time I grew it out a couple of years previously.

My crown had filled in almost completely, with no bald spot and very litle signs of thinning. The front had thickened up with a fair amount of new

hairs and the left temple had maybe 20-30 new hairs, although softer than the rest.

I'm now at the 13 month point and I continue to have a head of hair which I'm really enjoying but things seem to have halted for some reason. The

front of my hairline is quite good, although could still do with a little thickening up but as this was the first area to recede away back at the start it's

unlikely enough new hairs will grow in this area to give me a thick and dense hairline. My left temple has filled in alot but the hairs are about half as

long as the normal hairs, and still noticible softer to touch. I also feel the temple areas have started recedning somewhat again. Hopefully these will thicken up some

more and I'll be happy with that side. My right temple has STILL remains unchanged since beginning treatment, although I shouldn't complain as at

least it doesn't seem to have gotten any worse.

I've been shedding for a couple of months now and am concerned I may actually be losing hair now rather than keeping what I have. I'm hoping

this is just a 1 year point shed and that things will pick up again.

The sides I have experienced have been a slight increase in body fat and water retention which can be controled via working a bit harder in the

gym and more watery semen as well as less volume. Over the last few months these sides have gone away with exception to the water

retention. The sides started going away at the same time as my shed started and my progress began to slow/halt. I'm wondering if this means the

treatment is no longer working for me or if my last 4 months batch of generic dutasteride is fake or lower quality.

So, to be on the safe side I've changed my regime a bit. For the last few weeks I have been using trocommin and for the last week I've switched

to brand name avodart every other day and brand name proscar on the off days instead of my previous daily generic dutasteride capsule.

I don't feel my hairline is doing as well as it could and wonder if the rumours of dutasteride not being so effective for the front are correct. This is part of the reason for my dutasteride + finasteride combo experiment.

My hair could be better, but if I was able to keep what I have now I'll be very happy and continue the treatments indefinately provided the sides remain mild and managable.

Thanks for reading.

So once again a proof that you CAN apply minoxidil even if your head is shaved to 0. Kalbo, take note!

And oh yeah, congratulations on your success, bro.

Thx for airing your text lol.

Interesting story, I see you're experiencing several new sheds after a long way into the treatment. Well, maybe is it because of the dutasteride, I wouldn't trust it. Also, switching regimens might induce a shed.
