I have been taking Propecia/Finpecia since the late 90's and for some years I have not had much drive or motivation. I am wondering if others have had the same thing and found they improved if discontinuing Propecia?
Anyone's experiences would be much appreciated.
Thanks.

I found that I felt quite lethargic during the first few months but I seem OK now, I have been taking for a good 16 months

yes, i am unbelievably unmotivated. esp. at work. i was never like this before starting propecia back in august. i was also a hormonal/emotional wreck the first couple of months. i think it is a bit better now...but i still have enduring effects.

i know the numbers, only 2% have these side effects, but i know it is a much larger %, it is just that most don't voice their opinions or are ok with the side effects based on the hair benefits, myself included.

Be Careful. I took Propecia for a couple years. It crushed my sex drive. I am married, and 40, and my wife's drive is much lower than mine, so that was OK, maybe even good. BUT, I started having anxiety/depression type symptoms, and felt very 'OFF'. It just got worse and worse, until I read a post on here by a guy who had all the same things happen to him as I was experiencing, including very specific things not mentioned here. I stopped immediately, and slowly things have returned to normal.

I believe the stuff works, a LITTLE. You're not going to take six months of this stuff or a year, and look like you did when you were 25...or even 30. I also believe that it really messed up my life for a couple years, and I couldn't put my finger on what was making me feel so lousy.

There are safer alternatives. Good luck, and again---BE CAREFUL

I think the majority of these side effects are placebo. Ever heard of self fullfilled prophecy? You look for these problems and chances are your mind will trick yourself into thinking that way. Kinda crazy how strong the brain is.

SEEVES -- thank you for implying that my problems boil down to laziness on my part.

I'll have you know that I didn't even know these sides existed until they started happening and I went online to see if anyone else had the same problems. So obviously, my mind wasn't playing tricks on me as you suggest

I never said it was laziness or anything wrong with you. In fact I never even mentioned anything about laziness. It just seems like problems can be mental and just associated wrongly with something else such as a medication. Im not making any personal stabs at you or anyone so dont get offended so easily.

when on is on propecia there hormones are altered...so it's easy for them to be emotional/sensitive. seriously.

Is it possible to get symptoms years down the road. I have been on propecia since I was 18 I'm now 28 and I didn't have any symptoms until 3 years ago with anxiety/depression, don't know if the propecia could have anything to do with it now.

Wow, I guess I'm getting the exact opposite effect. I've been taking it for almost 2 years now and I feel so motivated that I finally started school back up and began my masters program last semester. Plus I was promoted to supervisor of my unit last year. I admit a couple times in the week I feel lazy when I get home from work and sometimes do a half-*** workout at the gym.

Note that these may be psychological. You are taking Propecia and you know it may have side effects.

Eg:

'Fake alcohol' can make you tipsy
By Dr David Whitehouse
BBC News Online science editor

Simply the belief that you are drinking alcohol can impair judgement and dent memory, say researchers.

According to Seema Assefi and Maryanne Garry, two psychologists at Victoria University in New Zealand, memory can be affected by an alcohol placebo.

Tests showed that participants in an experiment who were told they were drinking vodka, but were not, were more swayed by misleading information and more certain their memory was correct than those who were told they were drinking tonic water.

Dr Garry says the research has given new insights into how human memory works and how both social and non-social influences can affect a person's recall of events.

"What we have done is that we have made people's memory worse by telling them that they were intoxicated even though they had drunken nothing stronger than plain flat tonic water with limes," he adds.

Thinking yourself tipsy

For the study, 148 students were split into two groups, half being told they were getting vodka and tonic and the rest told they were getting just tonic. In reality, all were getting just plain tonic.

The research was carried out in a bar-like room equipped with bartenders, vodka bottles, tonic bottles, and glasses.

Flat tonic water was poured from sealed vodka bottles to appear genuine. The deception was completed by rimming glasses with limes dunked in vodka.

After consuming their drinks, the students watched a sequence of slides depicting a crime. They also read a summary of the crime that contained misleading information.

"We found people who thought they were intoxicated were more suggestible and made worse eyewitnesses compared with those who thought they were sober," Seema Assefi says.

"In fact the 'vodka and tonic' students acted drunk, some even showing physical signs of intoxication," she adds.

Giggling girls

When told, the sober students reacted with disbelief.

"When students were told the true nature of the experiment at the completion of the study, many were amazed that they had only received plain tonic, insisting that they had felt drunk at the time," she comments.

Dr Garry concludes: "It showed that even thinking you've been drinking affects your behaviour.

"Even on plain tonic water, the male students flirted with Seema as she conducted the experiment and the girls giggled a lot."

The serious point behind the research is that it demonstrates that memory is not just about filing away information like a computer does. It is what we use to understand and remember events in a social setting, such as witnessing a crime.

The research is published in Psychological Science, published by the American Psychological Association.
