Propecia and seman problem ----- SERIOUS TOPIC

Hello all. I have a question and please, no humor.
I have been taking Propecia 1mg daily for about 4 years. I sometimes have switched it up with Proscar 1.25 daily for 3-6 months at a time. that is all I take.

My wife and I have been trying to get pregnant for amost 2 years now. I had a seman analysis recently and my seman came back 99% "bad". We underwent IVF with no success as they only found very few sperm that were worth anything. This was at a fertility clinic and they made no mention about me being on Propecia as a trouble thing. I know there are many things that could cause my seman probelm. I am just trying to research.
I have noticed that since I have been on Propecia, when I "lose it" there is less "power" behind it and there is less seman then before i started.

Has anyone had a similar experience or can offer some advice?

And if I choose to stop taking it for a while, say 3-6 months, just to see if things improve with my seman, does anyone think that I will lose a lot of hair? Or what are your thoughts?

Thanks in advance.......

A man walks into a bar. He yells, "Ouch!"

Does that count as humor? In some countries, that would count as fascism.

I haven't come across any literature relating propecia with fertility or sperm count. Your "bad" semen has probably nothing to do with propecia. What did your doctor say? Do update us with your situation as it could potentially affect all of us.

A man had 50 yard line tickets for the Super Bowl. As he sits down, a man comes down and asks if anyone is sitting in the seat next to him.

"No," he says, "The seat is empty."

"This is incredible," said the man. "Who in their right mind would have a seat like this for the Super Bowl, the biggest sporting event in the world, and not use it?"

He says, "Well, actually, the seat belongs to me. I was supposed to come with my wife, but she passed away. This is the first Super bowl we haven't been to together since we got married in 1967."

"Oh, I'm sorry to hear that. That's terrible. But couldn't you find someone else -- a friend or relative, or even a neighbor to take the seat?".

The man shakes his head. "No, they're all at the funeral."

On a serious note though.

Three irishmen in a bar, one says to the other. Joking of course... Since I have been taking Proscar, almost 11 months now, I have not really noticed anything regarding the power or amount of semen. In fact my girlfriend has been stunned and taken back by the sheer power and volume. It's very difficult to direct it sometimes.

finasteride will affect people in different ways. Concerning your sperm count. You do know that the sperm count in men around the world is in decline. I think there is something else which is causing this. I would speak with your Dr regarding your sperm count.

If you need a hand with anything in the future just give me a shout. I will be happy to help out.

The Man,

Of all the research I've come across and doctors that I've spoken to, DHT (the androgen that finasteride inhibits) does not negatively affect sperm count nor motility for _normally fertile men_.

However, and a big however at that, men that are predisposed to infertility may have exacerbated effects by using finasteride. Here is a study: http://www.scielo.br/pdf/rhc/v59n4/21389.pdf

I suggest you read that study very thoroughly and bring it with you to your doctor. Let him/her read it as well. But for now, if I were in your shoes, I would kill the finasteride, and get retested in a few weeks. Please keep us updated on your results, as it would help many of us out in the future.

My advice... I believe there is a customer support number on the Propecia bottle, or package. I would contact the pharma that makes it and ask them.

Of course, when you first call, you'll get a mindless person on the other end of the phone who will give you useless 'level one customer support' advice. I'd tell them the seriousness of your situation, trying to get pregnant, etc, and try to get to a 'level two' person. It may require you asking the level one person to speak to his manager?

Or.. you could draft an email and send it to the pharma.

Or... you could draft an email and send it to one of the preminent docs who specialize in hairloss. Maybe send it to Dr Lee, Dr Proctor, etc.. just say you saw their website and had this question. Hopefully, they will try to give you good advice in hopes of you coming to them for future business?

I don't know.. I am just brainstorming here... but I hope you get a good answer to your question. I wish you the best in your attempts to have a child.

I think everyone should read that article I listed above! It's quite relevant and specific.

Propecia is truly a miracle drug. No only does protect against male pattern baldness, but also protects your unborn children from hairloss. Amazing stuff!

I believe that Finasteride does reduce "N.O." production and activity, and that would reduce the quantity and production (possibly quality?) of sperm.

"The Man" ... I suggest you start taking Arginine roughly 1,000-1,500mg daily for a week. Do not masturbate or release in any fashion. Then go get the fertility test done again (assuming its just something you can walk in and have done, no major costs or inconvenience).

My sperm production reduced by roughly 50% when I went on Propecia, remained that way for the 3 years I was on it, and for the 3 years since Ive gone off it. Never rebounded. I assumed it was related to going from age 25 to 30. I started taking Arginine and could not believe the results. The amount of semen more than doubled the week I was on arginine. Fully back to the way I used to be. Arginine directly affects sperm production, quality, and quantity according to the documentation I've read ... and it does this via "NO". Simply restoring that restored me back to normal.

Thanks.... Propecia.

gourmetstylewellness.com,

Sperm count and ejaculate volume are very different -- I think you are referring to the latter. While finasteride is known to lower ejaculate volume significantly (as it reduces the size of the prostate and seminal vesicles), sperm count at the 1 mg/day level has not been shown to decrease. But if it does, it could mean big trouble. With a low sperm count, you could be biologically infertile. With a low ejaculate count, the "explosion" just looks dull on video.

If I was having the problem, I would first switch to boxer shorts ( apparently thats the best thing a guy can do to increase his sperm count ) and secondly drop the propecia. I mean, at least for 6 months to a year - you wont go completly bald or anything, and it might help.

Did you get the boxers thing from Seinfeld, Thinning?

does arginine have any effects on DHT levels? I'm wondering if taking it with finasteride will increase DHT, canceling out the effect of finasteride.

You are absolutely right, actually i did't have any problems as yet with mine regime, i do visit to educate mine self a bit about. Infact million people using these treatments and only little % with some issues do visit such places, such little percentage of sides can be on any treatment, and in many cases many other factors may also involve.
