Propecia/finasteride Dosage Amounts

So I've been finasteride or Proscar for about 7-8 years so far. I first started off with 1mg propecia then the dermatologist prescribed 5mg finasteride to break into 4 which is way cheaper than propecia.

So that dermatologist is no longer available after 7-8 years.
So this new dermatologist won't prescribe finasteride/proscar since it's not "FDA" approved for hair loss.
They said 1mg is also the approved FDA amount for hair loss and any more doesn't do any good.

First of all, even though they are a dermatologist, from the years I've researched I'm not convinced that past 1mg, it doesn't do any more good.

Anyone have insight on the dosage amount of finasteride? I have been taking approx 1.25mg for about 6-7 years but am just worried going down to 1mg & changing to propecia brand, that it might not be "enough" now since I've been taking 1.25mg.

Thanks guys.

I would stick with what is working and get to another dermatologist or general doctor to prescribe the generic you have already been getting.
