Questions concerning length of ‘hair system’

Hello. Relative newbie to all this, kinda just laughed off having ‘fake’ hair, however increasingly really don’t see it as that silly and am very impressed my some of the results I have seen.

I am however slightly unsure as to why some of the hair systems I am seeing are not longer. Considering the greater coverage these would allow so less delectability to. The wigs worn for example by the hobbit characters in lord of the rings(before you scoff I don’t hair like them I am merely trying to illustrate the point). Am I missing something? Is it a cost issue?

I think most people have short-haired systems since they've always had short hair and just aren't interested in having long hair (or can't have due to work or family restrictions).

Having a long hairpiece would usually involve having long side and back hair, and some peoples' hair won't grow longer than a few inches. Besides, longer hair isn't for everyone.

I've got a 20" hairpiece, though I cut it back to about 18" to blend into my own hair.

There a few Toplace and Coolpiece customers with long hair, as well as several from Farrell as well. It's a little more expensive, but not much different. I pay an extra hundred bucks per piece to get the longer length (I changed it to 17" for my next order).

I am also considering a hair system. Honestly, the front lace systems look great, however is it harder to hide the region where the real hair meets hair system on the sides and back? How often do you need to visit the salon to have this area blended each month, before the system becomes easier to detect? I would also like to keep the hair about half inch length on sides and back. How long do you recommend I get the piece hair?

I don't find it that hard to blend my sides and back, but I've got very long hair and have the piece highlighted, so that instead of a smooth blend it's streaky, as normal highlights are. Also, I'd recommend not going for just a lace front. Look into either getting a full lace piece, or maybe a lace piece with a small poly perimeter on the sides and back to make it easier to use tape. Also, there are a few poly-skin systems (PSB from Toplace and Polyskin3 from Coolpiece) that are sufficiently undetecable to exposed hairline styles.

I don't visit a salon for maintenace, I actually do all my own attachments. I usually re-attach every 3 days to a week around the back and every 2-3 days on the hairline. The blending for me isn't as important, since my hair doesn't outgrow the haircut. If it was shorter I'd probably have to either cut my hair more often or start going to a salon for trims every 3-5 weeks.

Hairpieces usually come at a standard length of about 6" or so, which you then cut down to the right length and style. This is what people refer to as the "cut-in". I prefer going to a stylist (though I did my last two pieces on my own) though some people do it themselves. If you're keeping your hair shorter then I'd say you could just order the standard length of hair.

If you're planning on going to a salon for maintenance they can order the piece for you and make those decisions. However, many salons are out of date and provide systems that are old-fashioned, too thick, or miscolored. There are several stylists that provide good quality pieces, though, and even a few that work with Toplace and Coolpiece to allow you to get the mail order prices those providers offer without the sometimes frightening responsibility that comes with ordering and maintaining your own hair.
