Hello, I am new to this site. I noticed some frontal thinning a couple of years ago and became very upset by it. I tried to ignore the situation, but it's really starting to bother me. I went to the doctors office (dermatologists office) at Kaiser (HMO) and the doctor seemed not that interested. Wouldn't tell me if they thought my hair was thinning because she didn't know what it used to look like and couldn't compare. Said it was probably male pattern hair loss (I'm female.) Told me to use Rogaine for Men since the Womens version doesn't work that well.

This answer wasn't suitable to me, I wanted some tests to be run to find out if I was lacking any vitamins or what have you. So I went to a hair loss doctor who specialized in hair transplants to get some real answers. The dr I was was very imformative and said since I had low Iron and Vitamin D levels, that could be possibly the problem. After learning that I used to have an eating disorder for about 10 years during my teens and early twenties, she said that can cause hair loss down the road. You set yourself up to be pre-disposed I guess.

She recommended I take Iron and Vitamin D supplements as well as Rogaine for Men. That was 3 months ago and I have been following the program. She said to come back in 6 month from our 1st visit for a follow up evaluation.

I really dislike using the Rogaine product as it makes my scalp extremely itchy and give my hair a filmy look where I apply it. A week ago, I bought the foam and like it better although I still hate the whole process. It's very hard to apply the foam to just the scalp without getting it all over my hair. I color my hair and am concerned (so is my hairdresser) that the product will ruin my color process.

I have been reading about some side effects of Rogaine and am thinking I have some alarming ones. About 2-3 months ago, I noticed I was getting rashes along the trunk of my body and feeling itchy like ants were crawling all over me. I even had my lips swell up and had to go to the emergency room. I didnt realise it till just now (that's why I"m writing) it might be because of the Rogaine? I hate Rogaine. I haven't seen any improvement, only lots of shedding the first couple of months which made me feel like my thinning hair was even more noticeable.

I read sudden weight gain was also a side effect and I have noticed that my pants seem a lot tighter than usual.

I am looking for new answers to this embarrassing female hair thinning problem.

To make matters worse, people close to me say they don't know what I'm talking about when I say my hair is thinning in front. But I know when I look in the mirror and can see through my hair to my scalp, I"m not crazy. My hair is really thick all over the rest of my head, maybe that's why they discount my statements?

Oh and I forgot to add. The Dr at Kaiser said women around the age of 40 do tend to have their hair thin. How depressing.

I am also using Toppik hair fibers, to hide the shedding.

If you have read my story and have some advice about this issue, please comment. Thank you.

Re: 38 yr old Female, noticed frontal thinning, trying to fix.

Hi there, I feel your pain...

I know the swelling effect of minoxidil. My face feels bloated after applying it as well. The itchy scalp isn't that bad, at least for me.

I haven't really come up with a solution to the swelling problem yet. I just use less, or 2% (the weaker version) of it.

There are lots of threads in this forum discussing the right dosage and what works for whom. When I use the weaker version, it somehow feels as effective as the stronger one. Maybe you can try the female version or the weaker version? More isn't necessarily better.

One advantage of the weaker minoxidil is that it has higher alcohol content, and that alcohol actually makes it absorb quicker and more effectively. So, 2% minoxidil with high alcohol content isn't much less effective than 5%.

Good luck!!!

Hello and thank you for the above replies. I will check out the other site, thank you.

I spent the last hour or so really researching all the side effects of Rogaine and so many are ones that I now have. I mentioned, I believe in my above post that I had some kind of rash that came and went on my trunk. The derm said I was allergic to something, laundry soap. But, thinking back just 2 weeks after I started the Rogaine, my lips swelled up to the point where I went to ER. They didn't know what it was and said it was an allergy of some sort.

It must be the Rogaine. I am also looking heavier looking all of a sudden. I really think it's the Rogaine as it lists it as a side effect. When I first started it I felt really dizzy here and there, but since I know Rogaine is a blood pressure medication and my blood pressure was already normal, it must be causing it to drop.

I also noticed a few weeks ago I feel like things are out of focus for a few seconds when I quickly look somewhere else. Never had sight problems before. Visual aquity is one of the side effects. (lack of focus)

Do I sound like a nut? I was going to tell my doctor all this but don't know what I should do. They will probably just say stop doing Rogaine, but then what do I do? I'm already almost 3 months in on treatment. I"m tempted to just stick it out to the 6 month mark for the eval. The thing that is bothering me the most is thinking I have gained weight because of this medication. I wasn't overweight before so I don't look terribly bad, but now I have a slightly plump look in my opinion. This is upsetting.

What would you do if you were me? I know someone suggested the womens rogaine, but my dr, the specialist was sooooo against the female version. So was the dr at Kaiser too. Said it's just a marketing gimick and they put it in a pretty pink box. Said some careless women let the male version drip on their faces, grew facial hair, and sued because there was no warning. So they made the rogaine for women.
