Been lurking on the site for a few years now...I have been on and off Minoxidil and nizoral 2-3 years but pretty consistent the last year. My hairline even as a teenager was never a perfect straight line across my forehead, always had recession at the temples. Well sure enough around age 25 they started to recede but at a very slow rate. Around the same time I noticed right at the centre of my crown starting to thin. Like most of us I was in denial for a very long time. I then started using minoxidil I didn't see any visible improvement but I continued in hope of maintenance. I'm now 31 and I have diffused thinning on top which is becoming very noticeable under bright light (no slick bald areas thankfully) and my temples continue to recede.

From being a member on this forum I realised I needed some sort of anti androgen in my regime to have any chance of real maintenance and or regrowth. Right now finasteride is out of the question fear of irreversible sides etc. So I have decided to go down the road of RU and mixing it into my minoxidil at a concentration of 5%. I plan to start apply the mix just to my hairline first and see how my hair and body reacts, if I have positive results like maintenance thickening or regrowth I will then feel comfortable using it to treat my diffused thinning on top. I have recently in the last two months started to derma roll (1.5) my hairline and temple area and added azelic acid to my minoxidil. I have seen minor results with this some vellus hairs mixed with one or two terminal hairs in my left temple. Hopefully RU58841 is good to me and I will keep this thread updated with results good or bad. I just received my RU last night and will start applying this weekend. Here are some pictures of the current state of my hair under very harsh lighting IMG_9497.PNG IMG_9499.PNG IMG_9500.PNG IMG_9504.PNG IMG_9505.PNG IMG_9503.PNG IMG_9506.PNG IMG_9507.PNG

So you have finasteride fear BUT you want to use a topical that comes with a "not for human consumption" label all over it?
I don't understand.

Yeah i hear your point, however anything related to sides regarding RU all seem to stop after discontinuing from what i have read and researched so far, is it doing other damage that we are not aware of? who knows...But right now the horror stories and sides of finasteride are steering me away hell they even have a whole website/forum dedicated to preventing/coping with sides effects of finasteride. I believe your body needs DHT to function normally killing it off internally seems like bad news hence i have gone the topical route.

Precisely my question. I use it, but it is kind of crazy ;), because it is not a well experimented drug _at all_. So Propecia is unknown as regards sides, but RU is an unknown unknown to say it à la Rumsfeld.

Anything trying to combat hair loss is for sure risky what ever route we take, we just hope and pray its not going to do irreversible damage.

I beg to differ.
Most people use the approved drug, finasteride, and then RU only if they experience sides.
You are using RU, an unapproved drug, without knowing if the approved drug gives you any problems.
Also consider RU costs a lot more.
If I were you, I would try fina and only later would I try RU. The chances your sides are "irreversible" are not higher than having sides from a drug that is used by... 5000 people in the world as opposed to 100,000?

Then of course everything in these matters is random and maybe RU gives a full head whereas fina would have just made you impotent ;)

I don't understand.

At least psychologically it is easy to understand why someone can perceive RU as being 'safer'.

The idea of putting something on your head and having only miniscule amounts enter circulation is much more appealing to some people (myself included) than having milligrams of Finasteride coursing through your veins day in and day out, because when you take something orally, your whole body is getting it.

Basically we're betting on the fact that most of the RU will end up on the scalp receptors and whatever gets anywhere else won't be in great enough quantities to cause any damage. Whereas with Finasteride you have no way of getting around the fact that it's going to be affecting all of your 5-AR enzymes everywhere in the body and changing things in places where you don't really want or need it to.

I'm about to start RU myself, the first thing I am hoping for is no side effects, and then if I can at least maintain on it that will be more than good enough for me. As I really have no other options. I've been on Finasteride, only thing it did was give me puffy nipples and wreck my libido, and I didn't really get rid of those completely after quitting it either. I also don't think it slowed down my hair loss much at all.

In any case it's certainly worth to experiment, we don't all have the same genes and people respond differently to different treatments.

As you know very well, I use both fina and RU and have no side effects, so I am not preoccupied myself (except that it doesn't work maybe).

BUT you yourself have used fina before RU...

I know RU seems "safer", but what I don't understand isn't how people can discard fina before the last ditch effort of RU or CB.
Just think this: who says that in two years Kane and their competitors don't stop selling it? What do we do? Lose everything again?
Its "unofficiality" isn't an incentive...

Just a quick update, I got a little delayed in starting RU into the regime. So far i have been on RU for 11 days, no side effects to report nothing noticeably different and obliviously in such a short time no effect on the hair. A point to note I am only applying to my hairline(where i have recession) to see what kind of effect it has on me/hair i have diffuse thinning on top but didn't want to apply all over in case the RU had an undesirable effect. If i notice positive results over time like thickening of hair or new hair i will advance to applying RU on top. Just consistency and a waiting game i guess from here on

This is something I've thought of before. How do we know this chemical will be available in the long term? Imagine making solid hair gains with it and then suddenly having no access to it

Then switch to another regimen, in the meantime you'll have saved your hair several years of DHT damage.

Its very easy, if you use minoxidil already all you do is a 3grams of RU if you want a 5% concentration...no mess not complicated

If you are that worried, take out a loan and buy 5 years worth of the stuff and deep-freeze it. By that time CB should be out.

As long as people are buying and they're making a profit they will continue producing it.

1 Month update: So I have been on RU for just over a month now. So far nothing major to report, About 2 weeks in I had some extreme tiredness set in for about 3-4 days I had zero energy and felt like crap even my eyes felt exhausted or dry if that makes sense? I had considered stopping the RU as I am an athlete with a competition in a few weeks and I didn't know if this feeling would continue and I couldn't let it effect my training however I decided to ride it out and I came back to normal after a few days. I'm not sure if it was other things going on in my life or the RU but I just said id mention it as it was a little strange.
So hair wise I don't see much difference its hard to tell as I'm just applying to the hair line and at the 1 month mark I was not expecting much of a difference as its very early days..il continue to apply and dermal roll for greatest absorption

4 Month update: I continued to use RU in my hairline and temples along with some derma rolling. I have had no crazy results (not that I expected any) as I have only been applying to hairline, however my left temple started to get velus hairs that have turned terminal its hard to see it but they are there so that is a good result.
Since I got no major sides or crazy reactions to applying RU topically I decided to apply all over my head to combat my diffused thinning. I am currently two weeks in. Obviously nothing has visibly changed but I have noticed my hair fall has nearly halted completely where I was getting a few hairs falling when I brush or wash now I might get 1 or 2 at most so that's a good sign I feel. After a month or so I will update with pictures and try get a good shot of those new hairs at my temple.

hey recon. im thinking about starting ru with minoxidil too. how did it work for you?

I think I stayed on it for 9-10 month in total and it just got worse I took a break from all meds and things got even worse again and then in april I hoped on finasteride I have progress thread im keeping up to date in the success section... RU isn't strong enough to work I had no results with it where ive had great results with finateride at a low dose
