I can see more of my scalp through my hair the last couple of years and was thinking of trying out Rogaine shampoo that I saw advertised on the TV.

I understand that once I start to use the shampoo I will need to use it forever if I want to keep any of the hair that grows back.

Is the shampoo advertised on the TV and sold in Boots Chemist the best way to go or is there another brand I should use?

Is it necessary to use anything else like Dexpanthenol which I saw on a youtube video that is supposed to aid the efficnecy of Minoxidil.

The makers of Rogaine make something called Progaine shampoo, but it doesn't prevent hair loss. It is a volumizing shampoo that makes your hair look thicker. If you are looking for something that will grow your hair back, you'll need to get Rogaine, which contains minoxidil.

Thanks for the replies and sorry for the confusion.

Yes I am looking for something to grow my hair, it has thinned at the front on top of my head and I think there is a general thinning from the temples and crown too.

So you mentioned Rogaine which I understand is a topical foam solution.
I googled and see there are other brands of 5% minoxidil in liquid form, much better price (maybe less convenient to use though).

Is Dexpanthenol necessary for Minoxidil to be fully effective?

It apparently enables the soluton to get past the layer of sebum on the scalp.

No it's not necessary. I haven't heard of anyone using it honestly.

The other brands work just as well, but some prefer the foam because it doesn't leave your hair with a wet look like the liquid does. I use foam in the morning and liquid at night to get the best of both worlds.

Many thanks for your reply, great to hear form someone who actually uses it and has experience of the downsides.

So the foam in the morning, do you get this from Boots Chemist?

Do you mind if I ask where you get the 5% liquid from?

I have spent hours reading up on Minoxodil today and see that some do get a side effect of shedding of hair, did/do you experience that?

And have you noticed any hair growing in places it did not before like ears, etc, I have to watch this as I am hairy already, fine hairs on my temples (below hairline) ears etc and read that these can get coarser and darker.

I'm from the US, so I get both from Amazon. I use Kirkland's brand liquid minoxidil.

I did experience shedding. It wasn't too bad as I knew it would grow back thicker. I'm now 2 months in and I see a significant amount of new growth. I haven't had any hair growing on my ears lol. I do notice that there are a couple hairs growing a bit below my current hair line, but it may be too early to tell if they'll look out of place. Maybe hair will grow in around it.

I wouldn't get it from boots, it's crazy expensive! Order it online from amazon or google minixodil uk and the first link should be good.

It costs around 50 to 60 for a 4 month supply

(boots is 35 pounds for a one month supply)

Also it's worth saying that if your hair loss is in a larger area than say what's shown in the advert you'll need a fair bit more of the foam I usually go through 4 bottles in about 2 months

Thanks, I will google Minoxidil UK and Rogaine UK.

My crown is not bald but the front of my head in the middle is where I can see my scalp through my hair now in certain light, it seems like a general thinning in that area where I have a cow lick.

I will probably want to apply it over the whole top of my head, front to back as it is not a voluminous as it used to be so I could be getting through quite a bit.

Thing is my hair is quite fine and fly away so I have to apply hair gel and comb it back, cannot do anything else because of the cow lick.

I usually wash my hair every 2 days, do you need to wash it every day when using Rogaine/Minoxidil?

I wash everyday, you could maybe get away with it if you were just using the foam but I think their would be a noticeable buildup. With the liquid you'd definitely want to wash your hair everday, it's really greasy
